No forward or reverse with NSG370

Hey guys. As always appreciate the help in advance.

So been working on 06 4.0 nsg370 np231 Got it all road ready and put about 500 miles on it. Then when I started making hard left or right hand turns. Would hear a grinding sound coming from trans or tcase. Was trying to find issue then it just stopped shifting When ya put it in gear just grinds when you let out of the clutch. But if I shift it into 4 lo it makes no noise and shifts and drives.

I assumed it was the transmission but with no issue into 4 lo thinking transfer case. But after looking at exploded diagram of the tcase The 4wd is behind the 2wd gear on chain So that doesn’t really make since to me.


Any thoughts?


I have another clutch trans and tcase. And I’m pulling all the tools out now to try and fix. Hoping the problem will make its self known as I dig into it.

Trying to avoid putting more time and parts on then I have to.

Again any input greatly appreciated.

You have the skid plate installed? What does the transmission mount look like?

Going to guess the tcase shifter is out of adjustment. You can disconnect the shifter and manually put it in 2WD, 4WD, etc.

Yes sir skid plate mounted. I assume your asking if the rubber bushing is good on the trans mount. That’s what I thought at first maybe bolts where loose or bushing was shot and letting the trans move left to right. Everything appears to be tight. Going onto jack stands now will post pics in just a sec

Ya I thought that maybe I had something flipped the wrong way or something on the linkage so I took the link rod to tcase out of the seat on the bottom of tub mount. No difference

May have found the issue. As always devil is in the details. I put 4-5 inch lift on the Jeep. And had a tcase shim block on the skid plate. But it was causing Jeep to shift outta 4th if I hit a bump so I pulled it off. I need to get a dang sye on it but for now I have a longer shaft to put on it. Looks like as the suspension was traveling the slip yoke slid to the end of output shaft. I don’t think that was the problem but maybe. Putting longer shaft on now to see if that fixes it. It’s def not helping but the ends of thread on output shaft are not chewed up like it was spinning. Without driveline on it shifts and rear output spins in 2wd no noise. Maybe it was binded up. ??

dang not the fix but now with the drive line on it grinds for just a sec then jumps into gear. Will start to move then you shift out and back in grinds for a second then grabs. Maybe the trans or tcase bolts are loose checking that next.

try pulling the shift boots and see if that helps… do you have body lift?

I assume that there is no way to check the fluid level on the transmission. Just a drain plug and then fill until top side plug over flows ?

Haha. I love it everyone is on the same wave link. Pulled the front console and shift boot just a few min ago. No dice. It’s not making contact

What happens if you start with it in gear, then let church out?

If it works fine in 4 low and not 2 hi, what does it do in 2hi? My money is on a t case shifter linkage issue.

It’s like something it’s not making perfect contact or binding. I can’t find anything obvious. So going start pulling it apart

When I put my hand thru the shift boot hole on front and back of trans it doesn’t feel like it’s grinding there. Maybe in the tcase. Was trying to avoid pulling and replacing tcase that not being issue then have to re pull and pull trans but I think that’s where I’m at I’m going to check the shift fork at on the tcase. Trying to find it in the manual now

Your t-case isn't getting all the way in to 2wd.

Disconnect linkage from tc and shift it manually underneath.

Then get a cable shifter
