Yes, you can do that. I chose not to because that outer corner of the frame gets beat to crap when you play hard. The better way to do it would be as you said, flange inward 3/8" up from the lower edge of the frame but that leaves the frame itself in peril. You could or I would solve it by having some 1/8" 4130 bent up and then heat treated to harden it and then run that from the side of the frame down around and lap onto the skid. Otherwise, you wind up with this-

abandon the underside of the frame rail altogether and mount a narrower skid inboard. the angles would/could mount to the inner frame rail for skid mounting and structural support. the top would be open . no longer need nutserts, be less material to manufacture and a couple less lb's too.

And the biggest problem I am solving which is basically the ONLY reason I did it this way is I've never seen it done before, I've wanted to do it for a long time, and since I can do it this way, I did. They go on the inside of the frame at each corner of the notch up into the frame to transfer the crack potential into the wider part of the frame. Like this sorta but on the inside.
