Parking brake only works sometimes

Am i seeing an axle seal leak on both sides?contaminated shoes?

Not really anything much I see that says he has a leak, he does have a bolt that is loose or has been loose at some point.

Maybe the bolt is tight and the hole is just wallowed out?

🙂

I’m kidding - we haven't had a good faying surface discussion in a while.

Seriously, it always amazes me the small details that you pick up in these pictures, Blaine.

Ends of both axle tubes are darkened by something. Sure looks like gear oil. Isn't dripping though.

Reason i bring it up is brake shoes grab hard when contaminated with 90wt and then heated up a little

Dirt makes for a good witness line around fasteners. A quick glance will tell you if it moves at all

Edit: i see you were just fking with blaine, lol

He says he doesn't have a leak so I looked hard and didn't see any drips.

I'm aware.

I can't think of much else that would give such a variable ebrake. If the cables/linkage were binding you'd think the handle inside would want to set at different heights

Thankfully no… just fixed an axle leak though and didn’t clean up on the non-braking surfaces as I was in a bit of a rush

Edit: just to be clear… all braking surfaces were cleaned VERY well

Properly done-
Back off the cable adjuster under the tub until there is slack in the cables with the parking brake handle down.
Adjust the star wheel inside the drum until there is a bit of effort to turn the tire with the trans in neutral. You want a small bit of drag.

Once that is done, adjust the splitter under the tub. Snug it tighter, pull down on it and watch the levers at the backing plates. You are trying to get all the slack out without applying any force to the levers or pull with the cables. You can tell when it is correct by watching the levers. If you get lost and aren't sure, back the nut off and let the levers go back to full rest.

When you done, take it for a slow drive around the block or equivalent. Depress the button on the parking brake handle so you can apply it a decent amount on and off several times to bed the shoes into the drum surface to achieve greater contact.

Take it back, adjust the star wheel again after loosening the cables, get the small bit of drag, then adjust the cables again. When that is done, if nothing else is amiss, the brake will set hard 3-4 clicks up from the bottom and will hold the rig on most any angle until the anchor post shears off.

I totally missed the part about putting the trans or TC in neutral… so I was spinning the wheel and of course it was spinning the other side opposite making it had to judge… Dumb move, but we all were tired and not thinking correctly at that point.

I’ll do as you said though, loosen the splitter and readjust as above
Thanks as always man
