A Story of Indecision and Frivolous Spending

So I’ve learned tonight you can’t have it all...either your going to have a fat belly...or your going to have a plummers crack lol. Damn TJs...haha

Well, technically you can have it all, but you'd have to cut your transmission tunnel out, and weld it up about an inch or so higher (which would cause a bunch of other issues I suspect), so that you could tuck your transfer case all the way, without any body lift at all!

Nice TJ ....
Why the steep gearing with 31" tires ?

They are 31.7”, so almost 32”. Plus, I used to have 4.88 gears on my old Rubicon with 33” tires, and to be honest I always felt like I would have liked it more with 5.13 gears. So on this one, I think 4.88 should be perfect for the way I drive.

4.88 gears with 32s? Hilly area or what?

No, not really. I just remember how 4.88 gears were on my 33s, and I always think about how I wish I'd gone with 5.13 gears.

The 4.88 gears therefore should be great on 31.7".

Remember, the 42RLE has a horrible overdrive. These things are constantly hunting for gears, and with the factory 4.10s it's a nightmare. On 4.88 gears it was much better on the 33" tires, but 5.13 on those would have been probably perfect.

Go drive a 42RLE and you'll see what I mean. The steeper gears helps a lot.

In that case, I don’t think this thread is appropriately named, “Less is more.”

I drive one daily, factory gearing, with 33s. I haven’t noticed much if any difference in power from the stock tires these came with. Ppl do it with 3.73 gearing and say they can’t tell. Was just shocked when I read you were changing gearing. Usually it’s thecaddition of 35” tires that calls for the expensive gear change.

I just can’t stand the damn 42RLE hunting for gears. Is yours a 42RLE?

It would take some serious lag for me to undergo a gear change. I drove my jk on 33s with 3.21 gearing with wrangler MTRs and it honestly wasnt bad either. It’s all personal preference tho.
Yes, it is. I just really liked the off-the-line power of the steeper gears. It’s not high on my list of to-dos though.

I’m running 33’s with 5.13 gears. Which is awesome.

31’s, or 32’s, would be bad ass with 5.13 gears. I would so do that.

I think your still used to your M4 you had lol this is a TJ your referring to right??

You mean the M90? Haha, yeah. But even before that it was great with steeper gears.

I'm not surprised. It's a matter of preference I think. I like the feeling of steeper gears, even if it's on smaller tires.

You still have a drop on the TT with 0.5”, when I think of a TT I think of a flat belly ;).

Although any tuck is better than nothing!

I never had an interest in a completely flat skid. As we are finding out, just too much work and too many sacrifices to tuck that high. I'd be fine with an inch or 2 higher than stock, so the .5" BL will just give you that little extra room. The whole .5" BL thing is a Rokmen Offroad recommendation for using their TT system, and that system if what @Chris is looking into. I may go the same direction myself when the money tree grows some.

An independent crossmember and extra inches in clearance on both the belly and gas tank are as appealing as it can get :).

Although, you can fab up something nice with the genright.

I hope one of you guys get it so we can see it :).
