2.4 Engine Replacement Options

Hi Guys!

I'm new to the forum, but I have been utilizing the awesome info on this site for a while now since purchasing my 2006 SE in March. Prior to purchasing, I had researched the options for when the engine goes out and is not repairable because it had just over 170,000 miles on it. I bought it regardless, and although it is running great (no oil consumption, no leaks, had a timing belt kit installed right after purchase in March), I am interested to see if I have any options once she does die on me, or if I am SOL.

I will say that I know the 4.0 would have been a better choice. I do partly wish I had kept looking for one with the 6cyl, but this SE is Jeep Green Metallic, which is my favorite Jeep color ever.

It seems a majority of the information about engine options on the 4cyl is for the 2.5. I have the 2.4L PowerTech engine. 172,xxx miles on her now. I know trying to find a replacement 2.4 will be a challenging endeavor. Are there any other viable options for replacement? I know you can't swap in a 4.0 because of the configuration, etc.

Is having it rebuilt even an option?

You can have yours rebuilt but most places aren't going to have a core on hand so you will have downtime. It won't be cheap. The transmission is a 2 year only and only mate's to the 2.4. The good news is the transfer case is 23 spline so if you decide to do a 4.0 swap that's one less thing to worry about. Don't be surprised if you get a 3-4k bill for a rebuild. Good luck

Thank you so much for that info! Yeah, I figured there would be some considerable downtime if I had to go that route. Guess I would have to strategize since I just sold my "regular" vehicle to eliminate a car payment. My TJ is now my daily driver, so that's why I'm trying to prepare in case something happens.

I just can't bear the thought of ever having to part with this TJ! Thanks again for the advice!
