Hey all. I have a strange question. So I recently purchased a 2001 wrangler that has a 6 speed trans and an np231 transfer case. Has a 4” or so lift. I need to replace the front driveshaft on it because i believe it’s extended out too far or is just worn out. Has a lot of play in the center of the driveshaft where the two halves meet. Pretty sure it’s a 5 speed driveshaft which would be shorter than a 6 speed driveshaft. According to some googling I’ve done, the rubicon front driveshaft is longer than the non rubicon of the later years. My question is this. Am I going to need to replace the u joints on the front or rear of the driveshaft To make it work? I looked into having one made and the local driveline shop wants around 500 bucks. I can get a used rubicon driveshaft for 100 bucks

While it is quite unusual for the 6 speed to be on a TJ prior to 2005, that isn't what leads to the 03-06 Rubicons having a short rear driveshaft. Nor was that transmission specific to the Rubicon. The short rear driveshaft results from the larger 241 transfer case and the Dana 44 axle having a longer snout than other TJ axles.

Yes. Which makes the inclusion of the Rubicon details even more odd and why I didn't mention it.
We are talking about the front driveshaft. From what I have read, the 6 speed is longer than the 5 speed. Which would put the tc farther back. Which would make the driveshaft longer
X2. I have to carry different spare ujoints when I off-road my Rubicon versus my backup rig equipped with a HP30.
That’s all I needed to know. I guess I will contact Tom woods and just purchase a custom driveshaft from them
The Rubicon front drive shaft uses two 1330 ujoints for the double cardan assembly and a S44/1330 combo joint at the front axle. A stock 2001 np231 would have a 1310 yoke as would the front axle. As Blackjack said it would take a lot of work . Check out Tom Woods, Adam's or Denny's.
