Rearview Mirror Alternatives?

Ok, so after a beautiful weekend here I thought I would give another attempt at re-glueing my rearview mirror button back on and letting it cure in for 48 hours before installing the mirror back on. Once installed, I simply adjusted the mirror so I could see and the whole mirror and button just came right off again...wtf!

I'm so done with this mirror, now i'm convinced its my glass that is the issue. I don't know what else to think as to why it does not work for me. I bought the best glue, waited till it was the right temp outside, cleaned the glass, applied the activator, let it air-dry, set the button, let it cure for way longer than the instructions say (days longer), and still this thing falls off the moment I adjust it once.

Now i'm ok with no rearview, but is there any bolt-on alternatives that anyone knows of? I'm just curious at this point. I found this here but it says its only for CJ/YJ and i'm wondering if anyone knows if the footman loop in the top center of the TJ windshield is the same as older models?

Oddly my TJ has no mirror as well as it was laying on the seat when I bought mine. No idea why. The product you posted says it doesn't fit my '04, but maybe a modified version is out there? Don't know, but interested if anyone else changed out the mirror as I will need to do that at some point or find a glue that will stick.

you can use an accelerator to help bond the button to the glass. I use this all the time at work and home and its instant bond.

I was going to put one of these on the bar that goes across the top of the windshield..that way I'll still have a usable rear view mirror when the windshield is folded down

Yes I have bought mirror specific adhesive and used it as instructed.

No cage up front to attach to, i'm almost considering a suction cup mirror now, lol.

When I bought mine it didn't have a rear view mirror. I went and bought a replacement at auto zone a few months ago but have yet tried to put it on the windshield. I've gotten so used to driving without it.

Do you have glass coverage on your jeep.
If not most glass places won't charge you to attach the button. They have better products than they sell at napa/autozone.
Might be worth a shot.

Yes I do have glass coverage, but I called the only Safelite in my region and they said since I haven't had my windshield replaced by them they would not just affix a button. Basically you have to be a customer first, they said.

Also I figured out why it kept falling off, in addition to all those other factors, I have a bad heater core, which has antifreeze vapor lingering out of my defrost vents and has sort of permanently left some residue on my glass that will not come off. A film that no matter how many times I clean it, it still exists and will not allow the proper bond to happen.

I've decided that I need to have my windshield broken by a stone on the highway or trail and then can get a free replacement windshield plus the mirror attached at that time. Simple right? :facepalm:

That was part of the plan. Opps my glass broke. Free windshield and new mirror mount already attached.

I was in the same boat at one point...tried two or three different mirror-specific adhesive kits, followed the instructions, but could not get that thing to stay. Found an independent glass shop who did it as a courtesy, no charge, and it's been there ever since...a year or more now.

One installer-caused problem that can cause a mirror to not adhere properly is the use of too much of the glue included in the kit. It's actually nothing more exotic than common superglue. Too much of that can make it so it won't stick nearly as well.

I learned that about 30 years ago when my then-new wife's mirror wouldn't stay on after repeated attempts. I finally reduced the amount of glue used and it then held like a charm.

A smaller amount works MUCH better to glue your two fingers together too - I can say THAT from personal experience!

Exactly, that happens to me every time I don't want to spend the 10 seconds required to pull on a pair of vinyl shop gloves. Damn that stuff is hard to get off and it feels terrible once you get your fingers apart. If I put the shop gloves on, nothing will get on the gloves lol.

I also had similar problems about 30 years ago. I never would have thought back then to use less to stick more and I pretty much quit trying to get it right. Then for some reason I ended up using what seemed to be the newest stuff out there at the time, Blue Silicone. I don't remember remember how long after that I had that car but I do know the mirror was still there a few years after I sold it to a friend.
