On-board air tank location

Air tank? One doesn't need an air tank for refilling tires. It just adds needless complexity and doesn't air up a set of tires any faster.

However, should I ever get the urge to install an air horn or an air-activated locker or some other device that actually needs stored compressed air, I have an old Hadley 1/2 gal. air tank in one of my parts boxes that iI picked up for free at an RV boneyard. It is only 6" diameter x 8" long and will do the job. [When Currie was marketing 12v air compressor systems in the 1990's they used Hadley air horn tanks in their kits.]

Another potential reason for a tank or really for a thoughtful plumbing system off of the pump head is to dissipate heat before any low temp rubber or plastic bits can melt. My ARB Twin compressor mentions this as part of the installation.

A temperature resistant leader hose will do exactly the same thing. I have zero heat issues using just 22" of Eaton high temperature 3/8" hose (approx. $5-6/ft. at NAPA) . The brass swivel hose fitting at the end of the leader hose gets warm but not too hot to handle and there is no risk of melting parts.

Then plan on doing it twice. A tank that will fit there wont come close to doing what you think you need to do.
 
I briefly considered using my Dirtworx bumper as an air tank... it's just rectangular tube. That was until I did the capacity calculations.

Years ago, I turned my front bumper into an air tank. My recollection is that it was about 2 gallons. All it did was act as a buffer for the York to keep the pressure switch, check valve and pump head bleed valve in better harmony so it would shut off at full pressure more reliably.

It looks like the same VIAIR that I have - in the same location. I have another little 1/2 gallong VIAIR tank I'm going to add in if I can find a suitable location for it. Unfortunately, it only has 2 ports - one in each end. Which means it really needs to be mounted vertically so it will drain - which is causing no end of grief as to where I can put it. I'm actually looking at the backside of the front bumper as one possibility. Or I may make/procure a right angle bracket to give me more options.

Perhaps not to your level but I've experienced it.

I carry a can of WD-40. Usually have to clean up/spray out one if not all the chucks. And we're religious about getting caps on tire valve stems.

This is not sepia or any filter...
