New Wrangler JL Unlimited VS Used 2022-23 Lexus GX460

I can understand that, that’s why I bought mine. I’ve only seen a couple with the same specs and a fellow forum member ordered one like mine after seeing it.

If I had the money to buy new, I’d go for the 250 as well. They are only a couple grand more than the 150’s when comparing new. My max OTD is around $55k though.

I think I’m going to test both this week and see if that helps decide, will probably make the decision harder. Gotta figure out by the end of the week though.

Very good chance you like everything on the F150 better than the Lexus at least for the first 80-100k miles of the F150’s life.

If you plan to only keep a vehicle to the end of warranty it’d be hard to not consider the F150.

Any reason not to consider a Tundra - besides the engine recalls….? Which is a serious one.

So that’s where it gets tricky, I was originally planning to keep whichever I choose, well past the warrantee. Thinking 8-10 years probably. The Lexus doesn’t scare me in that regard, but the ford does.

I really don’t like the looks of the tundra much. For some reason the F150’s just appeal to me over the rest.

Something else that I did think about, if I purchase a GX now and in 2-3 years change my mind or needs change, finding a F150 will be easy. If I go F150 now and regret it after a couple years, finding a low mileage nori green GX460 will be quite difficult.

Any news?

I am working on getting the financing for the Lexus right now (For whatever reason the credit union I'm trying out is taking forever). That way on Sunday when I go look at it, if it all checks out, I can purchase it.

I came to the conclusion that if I went with the F150 I would probably end up regretting it and still continuing my search for a GX. There are millions of F150's out there and only 2,000 of these GX's in green.

I’m in the same boat. JL or GX460. I really dont want another jeep. I need a suv so my dogs can ride in the back. Putting a lift kit on a gx460 is way easier. I like that it’s IFS so it will be more comfortable for everyday driving.
I’m leaning towards a 2022 gx460 white with captain seats. I’m unsure which colored seats I want.
If I purchase the gx460 I plan on running 33’s and Eibach stage 2r Coilover kit or Dobinsons MRR.

The Lexus is going to be a more reliable DD. The Jeep will be better for wheeling and not so reliable.

Not sure on the Lexus, but I was considering a 4Runner a few months ago when I bought a new DD. At that point, the most common complaint about the 4Runner was the trans. Not that it would break, just reminds me of complaints about the 42RLE. Not enough gears and overall crappy shifting. Disregard if it's a different trans obviously.

Was thinking of getting a JLU or JKU and my wife insisted that we don't end up with a third Wrangler lol. I wasn't going to win that battle. Though she also wasn't happy with the price of my new Ram 1500.

Ended up going with a half ton truck for towing. Main complaints I read regarding the Tundra and current Toyota's is quality control is poor. Rattling, things installed poorly, noisy AC internals, and just general cheapness of parts. No real complaints about engines and trans dying though. Just minor gripes.

Check on Carvana if going with used. I've sold a couple vehicles on there in the past few years and have talked to a few that bought from them.

The Lexus has a different transmission. Everything I've researched about GX 460 is that the driveline is pretty bullet proof, low tech, and reliable. It's pretty much a toyota land cruiser prado, that can be found overseas everywhere. So far working through Carmax and everything is good, hoping it stays that way.

I really don't plan to modify the GX if I end up with one. Maybe wheels and definitely more aggressive tires, that's it. I don't need a third "project" vehicle.

I like the 4runner as well but they are slow. Not any much better gas mileage. My coworker just sold his 23 4runner with King 2.5s. "It was a slug and wasted to much gas. "

Another reason I’m going with the gx460 it takes less suspension parts to lift the vehicle. Basically UCA’s, coilovers ,rear shocks and rear springs. Instead of all the individual pieces it takes to lift a wrangler. It won’t be a project vehicle for me install one suspension and it should last me years with low maintenance .

Well the search continues for a Green GX. Drove 3 hours down to Virginia today and was not pleased with the condition of the one at Carmax. Last week had asked for any photos of scratches, chips, dents etc. Saleman sent one photo that had some light scratches, nothing major. Well after seeing it today, the whole front end was littered with small stone chips and the passenger front fender had 3 large scratches from something hitting it. 2 dents and also 3 areas with touch up paint. I was very disappointed to say the least.

On a positive note it drove amazing and the interior was in great shape. Definitely the right vehicle for me just not that one. Can’t drop $50k for something with so many paint issues.

Seems a mere speed bump in your search - at least you know it’s right.

I have to ask, what are your thoughts ok the 550? I love the styling, especially when I saw one in person.

Yeah, I ended up rented a 24 4Runner to drive down today, thought it would make a good comparison since they share the same frame. It was crazy how different the GX was compared to the 4Runner. 4Runner was more truck like and felt like it was bouncing down the road. The GX had a more solid sporty feel to it and the V8 sounds wait better the v6 in the 4Runner. 4Runner was actual pretty uncomfortable to drive, seats were pretty hard and not supportive. Seats in the GX were pretty freaking awesome.

I love the looks of it but I don’t have that kind of money. I think they start 65-70k. Though most are well over that. I’ve been following some threads on them and lots of people love them, but there are quite a few that talk about bad quality and has a cheaper feel than the GX 460 in terms of materials.

I have driven a 5th gen 4Runner but don’t remember as I was anti foreign vehicles at the time…. As I think you know I have a 2007 V6 4Runner and pretty well love it, even approaching 240,000 miles. It certainly took a little getting used to, and the Tacoma TRD Bilsteins I put on made a world of a difference. A newer 4runner is definitely a possibility for me though I need to drive one as I’ve read the claim is the 4th gens were higher quality.

I do agree with price on the 550. If money wasn’t an object my wife would be driving one. Id love to check one out but there is no point… at least for a half decade of depreciation.

I’m trying to get over my dislike of the looks of the 460 as it’d likely be the perfect vehicle for what I want/need.

Yeah, I was actual surprised how much I didn’t care for the 4Runner. Spent 4 hours in it yesterday and 6 today and my body feels it. The hour I spent in the GX was pure comfort. I didn’t really care for the looks of the GX that much until I saw the green version. The only other color I’d consider would be silver, but in all honesty I’ll only buy a green one.

It’s so hard for me to really find any vehicle I truely like the looks of anymore. And then when you see one, the price tag usually makes it a hard pass for me.

So much shit looks the same and built like crap too.
