Tailgate Cable?

The 2005 Wrangler Sport i bought has a cable that stops the tailgate from opening up too far, but it's really stretched and worn out to the point where it's allowing the tailgate to open so far that the hinge hits the passenger tail light assembly. in fact my tail light assembly is actually cracked/damaged from this; probably from repeatedly being opened while parked on the side of the road where the crown of the road and gravity pull the tailgate into the light and its puts a lot of force/weight on it.

What is the proper OEM part i need?

Anyway, is that cable an OEM part? What can i do to replace this with the proper part? I searched for rear tailgate latch cables but only saw ones for CJs, and when i searched specifically for TJ ones i kept getting latches for the actual doors (driver/passenger).

Like @lBasket said, its not OEM, but if you want to retain the feature the PO installed, pictures would help so we can figure out what was done to fabricate the tailgate cable.

To be fair, someone keeps robbing my online name in a bunch of the games I play so I end up adding Space or Sir in front of it (Stolen from different previous names I used)

So, iBasket, what is your purpose and cost? Oh wait let me guess. you are an aluminum basket with 0.10% titanium marked up at $1,999.99 and if the basket is too small, you can upgrade to the larger one for another $999.99?

I am not mad, just upset with the whole "Upgrade" options apple offers... how the hell is going from 16gb of ram to 32gb of ram cost $600?

i uploaded a picture and can attach more if need be, but they're huge so i only attached the one for now lol.

i'm not trying to retain the "feature" the PO installed, as it's obviously not a good solution- i'm trying to find what the correct OEM part is so i can "restore" the proper function to the tailgate.

What v6 did you swap in?

So there is no OEM part? Why does it look like there is a latch/arm missing in between that grey fixture with the 2 bolts underneath the cable mount point on the door, and the 2 bolts on the inside of the cab where the foam has been cut away?

Otherwise Jeep designed a tailgate with a range of movement that allows it to hit and damage the tail light assembly? Maybe i should just invest in one of those tail light cover cages instead lol

Yes the OEM functionality is to smash your taillight.

I think what you're describing are the contact points for the electricity to get to your 3rd brake light?

No OEM part as the tailgate will not hit the taillight in factory form. Ive had zero instances where my taillight is in contact with my tailgate. It seems like the stops in your hinges are broken, hence the DIY limiting strap.

You would then have 3 options.

Remake the DIY limiting strap with Paracord or the shielded wire like the PO Edit - Or put in a gas strut to prevent it like this.
Replace the hinges with OEM
Install MORryde HD tailgate hinges.

Nope, that there is one of the very rare V6 models. Says so right there with the V6 badge (that I am 90% sure is a Honda badge)

You would then have 3 options.

Thats the tire, the image shows the actual tailgate hitting the taillight dead on. Kinda similar to this post from 2020

oh well blame the previous owner- and as a previous '04 v6 accord owner i can confirm. i've never paid attention to it, as i thought all the wrangler sports came with the V6. i'll probably take it off now that you've all pointed it out LOL

I too would have not really questioned the V6 since the JK and newer use a V6, but we have the good ole 4.0 inline 6.

But yeah, seems like the hinge stops decided to go bye bye (Probably due to oversized spare tire and not being careful when opening the tailgate) but you have options, cheap (Replace the wire), waste of money (The strut), or doing it smart (Hinge replacement, either OEM or MORryde)
