What passed for a meal when they were called C Rations... I ate them for about the first 5-6 years of my military career. The first MRE's were fielded in 1984...

I always thought it was hilarious that you got four cigarettes and four matches!
They were rather optimistic that you'd only need 4 matches.
Why did they supply matches at all? Weren't you issued a Zippo lighter?

Yep! Still have it. Got the Navy anchor and my name and date Oct 1969.
That’s pretty cool. When was it issued? After boot? After A school?

Just one example:
Down Periscope... Should be shown to all recruits...
Executive Officer Martin T. 'Marty' Pascal: Jesus, Buckman! This stuff's been on the Stingray since Korea! This can expired in 1966!
Seaman Buckman: [tasting contents of can] What's the matter, sir? It still tastes like creamed corn.
Executive Officer Martin T. 'Marty' Pascal: Except it's *deviled ham*!
Seaman Buckman: Now that would be a problem.

During basic at Great Lakes. We were marched to the Exchange and told to buy toothbrush, toothpaste, shaving stuff, soap (Zest only!), extra shoe laces. We were allowed to buy cigarettes ($2/carton) and lighters. There was a guy who would engrave them while you waited.
I would show a picture, but it, along with everything else, is in a storage facility somewhere in Marietta.
