New Hi-Fi

Bought myself a "new" Hi-Fi system last week. TEAC BX-550 Amp, TEAC TX-550 Tuner and DUAL 610 Turntable. The AMP and Tuner are from 1981 and the DUAL Turntable is from 1975. You can't beat this old stuff. I love the VU meters. I'm Gen X, so I love this stuff.

I have been looking for a turntable.. the prices are insane. Decades ago I had a Dual and a Technics.. Can't remember what I paid for the Dual back then but I swear the Technics was maybe $150.. if that much. I am seeing them for multiples of that, with broken cover hinges and no cartridge.

Back then I was using a Marantz 2252B receiver... saw one on MP for more than $1500.

My dad had a full Mcintosh setup.. Don't know how he afforded that on his income in the 70's & 80's.

I also had an open reel tape deck when I was young. Few things were cooler than the reels turning and all the VU meters dancing while listening with a set of wired headphones... The shear awesomeness of an old rack system will never be understood by todays' BlueTooth generation.

Does anyone know where to get parts for old equipment like this? In the 90s my brother-in-law gave me his Technics turntable, and it has developed a speed "wobble" - it goes fast - slow - fast - slow. I suspect it needs a new motor, or the motor speed controller.

You can try eBay.
It’s amazing what a good cleaning can do to old electronics especially turntables. Deoxit has a couple good products for cleaning and lubricating.
Lots of good YouTube videos.

Nice set up, I had a pioneer sx-650 back in the day. I was looking to do a vintage setup a few years ago but opted for new Marantz pm8006 and project turntable

Yep, I have some Deoxit and other contact cleaners. I don’t think it will help the 33 1/3 RPM motor, though - it seems as if the speed controller is faulty. I initially thought a capacitor may be dried out, but there aren’t any.

Used to be a lot of electronic repair shops around that would work on our stuff. Usually owned by a grouchy old dude with a grey pony tail.
They’re getting harder to find.

I think so. I’d have to dig it out of storage to verify. Been using a Technics SL-L25 Linear Tracking turntable in its place.

I found a matching cassette deck to go with the Hi Fi. It needed a bit of tidy up, new belts and I had to fix a broken pinch roller spring post, but after that, she plays tapes beautifully. Very happy with it.
