Bear with me while I try to explain this - I'll probably do a piss poor job...

Its been 24 years since the last time I was overseas - my wife and I spent quite a bit of time in Greece over several years. Now, we just got back from 3 weeks in Egypt. We both have the same feelings now (only worse), as we did a quarter century ago: We don't want to be in the USA anymore.

It isn't because these places are "better" than the US - they're not. Greece is poor, Egypt is poorer. Egypt is a police state, run by the military. El-Sisi is hated by the populace, as he doesn't give a damn about them. Etc, etc. Greece isn't much better, esp. since they "joined" the EU and the Euro zone - prices doubled overnight; I saw it first hand.

BUT: Our government doesn't give a damn about us either. We have two competing visions that are both stupid and tyrannical, supported by "useful idiots" that only want masters that will keep "those people" under control. In the meantime, we all lose. I'm reminded upon our return of just how regimented we are here. We supposedly have more freedoms than anyone else, but do we? Much of that supposed freedom is lost what with the Cradle-to-Grave, Womb-to-Tomb Nanny state. The vehicles people drive "over there" would NEVER be allowed here by our Benevolent OverLords. You can walk into a pharmacy and get many/most drugs - including antibiotics - without a prescription. The pharmacist gives you what you need and they're CHEAP. Contrast that to the bullshit we have to deal with - never fucking mind that our oh-so-wonderful FDA (Fucking Dipshits & Assholes) de-facto banned the only fucking cough medicine that actually fucking worked: Terpin hydrate. I'm particularly pissed about that right now as my wife has a cough that she can't get rid of. I'm fucking beyond sick of the Nanny Statism. OMFG, the kids ride bicycles (those that can afford them) without helmets!

I don't know about Greece now, its been a quarter century since we were there last - but the American bass-ackwards bullshit isn't tolerated in Egypt. Criminals do NOT have more rights than their victims, they do NOT tolerate Woke, DEI, CRT, or any other liberal bullshit, the borders are NOT wide open, the kids are well behaved and respectful - and so are the adults. Indeed, this is the heart of our "problem". The people. The Egyptians were wonderful, the Greeks were wonderful. Americans as a whole are NOT. The only "situation" I had in Egypt involved an American - OBVIOUSLY Liberal - Karen at the Luxor airport as detailed elsewhere. I had a run-in with a similar Karen and her husband in Target just yesterday. Self righteous prigs. People here are just down right RUDE, are self entitled and self righteous, don't know how to fucking drive (more on THAT in a minute), etc, etc etc. Contrast to the Egyptians and Greeks - they're friendly, helpful, not effete or self-entitled, and are nice to be around. Here? I'm getting to where I don't even want to set foot out of the house and deal with American idiots - on the roads, in the stores, where-ever. Wife feels the same way.

Of course, I MOST certainly could write a tome longer than "War & Peace" about American smartphone culture that pretty much doesn't exist in Egypt, even though there still is a distressing number of them to be seen. I won't bore everybody - Egypt has yet to be destroyed by them; kids don't have them, many adults don't either. *JOY*

This is just RUDE - and of course it was an American.

I wish people drove here, like they do "there". Of course, that is quite impossible due to the Nanny State - 3/4's of Americans would be in a crash the first day driving like they do in Egypt or Greece. To an American eye, its complete chaos - but it works and it works far better than our system does here. VERY few stoplights, they're not needed. I didn't see any crashes the entire time I was there - and I also didn't see any rubberneckers either.

Oh, and I probably rode in about 2 vehicles with an automatic transmission - American luxury loving and effeteness need not apply!

Thoughts?

But IMO there's really no where else to go, depending on what you value.

At the moment, you're probably right. But its starting to look like that won't be the case much longer. *shrug* Right now, I miss the unpaved, dusty streets of Siwa Oasis whenever I have to deal with American idiots like I did yesterday. I'm sure Siwa would get "old" if I lived there full time, but as things continue to deteriorate here, somewhere else/anywhere else starts looking better. Wife gives it 5 to 10 years.

I won’t argue with any of your complaints, they are all valid. Clearly you value freedom. Where it exits at all, freedom will always be under attack. In the US, the “nanny state” as you describe the left and the present authoritarian right both actively make us less free. Its very frustrating. But don’t idealize places that are much more homogeneous than the US. Social order is easier with fewer differences. You are also a non-conformist and I, for one, value the unusual perspective you bring to the table here. Despite its many problems, I also value our country for your freedom to do that. I hope you stay, but if you go, good luck and let us know how it is out there.

Yea - I am REALLY working hard to avoid the "grass is greener" thought process. I know the bullshit I have to deal with here - such as a certain completely un-helpful post in this very thread which just serves to underscore my disgust with America and Americans. I do NOT know what "their" bullshit is "where ever else", I'm sure its considerable and probably worse than it is here - FOR NOW. I saw the police state in action in Egypt, and it wasn't pretty. But how much longer until we're just as bad or even worse like Perfidious Albion is?

The thing I value above all else is people who are REAL. I'm not seeing that here much anymore and I haven't for many years. I rant and rage all the time about how effete and pussified Americans are - and of course how its ALL about the PHOOOOOONNE. But those are just symptoms. *shrug* Most people "over there" that I've encountered are FAR more REAL than 99% of the people here. Never mind the yet-another-Karen I had to deal with yesterday.

For the moment, I think I'm in the best place possible in the world (Florida) - people on this forum dislike DeSantis but he kept us free from most of the bullshit - and I didn't see Trump do much in that area. I would have been arrested and doubtlessly fired from my job if I had stayed in Commie-Fucking-Fornia. But how much longer will Florida remain a bastion of (relative) freedom?

Oh, and the food quality is WAAAAY better "over there".

I'm being serious right now, it sounds like you need to move to a really small town in the middle of nowhere. But what does the government actually limit you from doing in your daily life that doesn't actively harm other people?

As for that question - its many things, not the least of which is the damn Nanny Statism. My example of the FDA and Terpin Hydrate is but one example that is impacting my wife right now as I type this. Gov't should keep me from harming other people - but their interference in my life should END THERE. Of course, now they're not even doing that - the criminals and lunatics are running the asylum.

I remember the time I was driving my pickup truck near Sutter, Creek California. I had two kids in the back. The local constabulary took exception to this, much to my shocked surprise. A fortunate gap in traffic, and a couple of sharp turns lost the cop, but I was then, and remain now, pissed off about it. Something else that was completely commonplace and "normal/usual" outlawed by busybodies and do-gooders - I have zero use for either. I see equivalent things overseas that nobody thinks anything about it, but here in the "No-no" states of Amerika, the State knows best. FUCK THAT.

Never mind the crap being sold to us for automobiles in this country. A bad combination of Gov't regulation, American effeteness, and CarCo GREED.

Buckle-up buttercup. Things are going to get far worse in this country before they get better.

My wife has talked about leaving too, frequently. If it wasn't for the fact that we live in rural Wyoming on a bunch of land, I might entertain the idea.

However, I've said it before and I'll say it again. I will not live anywhere where I cannot own and carry a gun. In addition, I'm not going to run. You can only run for so long but eventually you have to fight.

I can assure you that there are plenty of assholes in every country, even in Greece or Egypt. That nanny state issue is also very common, especially in so called western countries. It's because people want to be ruled or rather be cared for, so nanny state is what you get. Of course people would never say, please give me some rules and regulations, I feel so free. They rather say, my neighbour does x and I don't want him to do x. He endangers himself and others. Please lets ban x and issue some huge fines on it. If we all do this... there you go.
The only real issue in the US, as far as I can see it, is unfettered power for every fucking copper. They can just do whatever they want. You need to stay where you are and fix that problem to get more real freedom.
I'm not saying the grass is not greener elsewhere. It actually can be greener somewhere else. I went from Germany to Australia almost twenty years back and I didn't regret it one bit.
However, you are too late to the party, age wise. Sorry.

It's been almost 43 years (USMC 1 year on Okinawa) since I've been out of the country except for going to Canada for a week in 92. After I got back from Okinawa I told myself I'd never leave again and have stuck to it except for Canada. Even as well off that Okinawa was back then, it still didn't compare to the US. Spending more time there than a vacation certainly lets you see things differently in all aspects of life. I'll be 65 in August and still no desire to travel the world. We live in Northeastern Nevada and although it isn't perfect, in 10 minutes I can be away from pretty much everyone and everything and not see another person for hours if I so choose to do. As much bullshit regulations and controls as we have here, it's still the best place as many around the world want to come here (Unfortunately). I get where you are coming from (former Kommiefornia citizen myself) and avoid crowded places, airports, etc. About 2-3 times a year I have to go back behind enemy lines (Kommiefornia) for family stuff. I get worked up just crossing the border into Kommiefornia and spend as little time there as possible anymore. Being away from there and then going back, you notice that there's lots of people that are crazy out there. Good luck on your decision with staying or leaving.
