Okay in a snow machine , not so much in a car . Just a cheap transmission to get through the warranty period .

A couple of guys I knew back in the 80s had CRX that got over 50 mpg with a low tech engine.
I always liked Honda's early hybrid gas/electric, the first gen Insight. 1.0L 3 cylinder VTEC and an electric motor, north of 60 mpg. Manual gearbox preferred.

I always thought the original Insight and CRX were kinda nerd cool.A couple of guys I knew back in the 80s had CRX that got over 50 mpg with a low tech engine.
We had a 2000 Chevy Metro with a 996 cc. 3 banger 5 spd. manual . It would get 48-52 m.p.g. on my 32 mile commute , that included a 3050 foot elevation change in 16 miles each way .

We got about 51 with our '96 Passat TDI. Hybrids are a waste - if they'd make a diesel electric, they'd have my attention.
That one I considered a shit box at the time, but it has grown on me. Was it GM or a rebadged import?

Suzuki as I recall. I test drove one once - it was a good enough little car. That one I considered a shit box at the time, but it has grown on me. Was it GM or a rebadged import?
Every time diesels start to make headway in this country, some idiotic company screws it up. Usually GM, but "thanx a lot VW" for this one...Too bad about VW's Dieselgate. I think we can blame that for no diesel hybrids, which I agree would be cool.
Suzuki / GM joint venture built at CAMI in Ontario . We got a good deal on it and payed $ 6800.00 for a new car with 60 miles on it . It was actually well built and had Okay performance . I used it like it was an all weather dual-sport bike for commuting .
I seem to recall the GM version had a 3 cyl, the Suzuki version had a 4 cyl - but I don't remember the respective numbers of the two engines.
You could get either engine in either brand the 1.3 l 4 banger was in the 4 dr sedan , the 1.0 l 3 banger came in the coupe .
The 3 banger had 55 h.p. and 58 lb.ft . with TBI . It had the performance of a 60's Chevy II, Falcon , Valiant with a 6 banger 3 on the tree.
I don't even remember a sedan version, that's how rusty my memory is of it. But it shows that 55 hp is perfectly adequate in a smaller car.

Buick is selling a 1.2L Turbo 3 cylinder these days. The Envista is built in China mostly and is becoming well received in the US. $25K or so and not horrible looking for a GM product.
Roughly 135HP and 164 lb/ft isn't too bad for a 1.2 liter.
