Older KIT: Crown Automotive Dana-35 Chromoly Axle Shaft Kit (Drum Brakes) for 93-02 Jeep Wrangler YJ & TJ; 92-01 Cherokee XJ and 93-96 Grand Cherokee ZJ RT23001

NEW KIT: Dana 35 Chromoly Axle, Brand: Crown, Model: 4713192PK, $390.00

East Coast Gear Supply (ECGS) offer a beautiful set of Chromoly DANA 35 - 27 spline axles for $430 USD + an INSANE $207.83 USD Shipping cost that ='s $637.83 USD, convert to CAD add GST, possible Duty and Brokerage Fee's at the border - The Axles will cost over a $1000 Canadian.

So looking at Canadian Outlets with reasonable Shipping, I found 2 Outlets ROCKY ROAD Outfitters and Just JEEPS but they only offer the CROWN Automotive Supply Chromoly Axles for the DANA 35 - 27 spine differential. Total cost is reasonable including Tax with Shipping at approx $520 to $540 CAD.

Amazon has the Yukon Cromoly DANA 35 - 30 spine for a reasonable price with FREE shipping but NO 27 spine Axles.

I'm familiar with established Brands of Chromoly Axles but not so much with CROWN Automotive - The Specs look impressive - So before I pull the trigger and purchase these, I would like some opinion from my fellow JEEP TJ Forum members ;o)

Yes & Yes I hear you WHY & WHY did you NOT go with DANA 35 - 30 spine Carrier and axles. The truth is I had NO Clue that Chromoly DANA 35 - 27 spine axles where so rare - especially in Canada - The 30 spine are easy to get in Popular Brands - However, the Axles where LAST to buy on my list - Little did I know I would hit a wall with my JEEP before I even started juicing her ;o)

I am running 33" tires and have no intentions of going 35".

So what do my fellow JEEP Enthusiasts think about the Quality and Reputation of the Crown Automotive Chromoly DANA 35 - 27 spine axles ;o)

I would really hate to - Never Mind - I'm Rambling but not all is lost thinking I can always carry the originals as spares - You don't have that option with after markets.

You don't want to run a chromoly shaft in a Dana 35 since the bearing rides directly on the shaft. Unless those are the type that can be used in a Dana 35, there is a different type of steel shaft that is stronger than stock but not 4310 or 4340 chromoly.

Those or similar are what you want. 1541H is the correct stronger alloy for C-clip shafts.

Thanks mrblaine: I'll have to look into that as well; kinda sounds like a Nitrate Tuff finish like GM used on some of their HP Cranks back in the day; but, are they available in Canada. I do not believe your .CA location signifies Canada - apparently India may have a better trading relationship with Canada then the U.S have these days ;o)

I've a Chromoly Yukon Axle on the way for the DANA 30 - 27 spine Front housing - Great Deal from Amazon with FREE Shipping.

Basically the difference is case hardening versus through hardening alloy steels. The 4000 series alloys are through hardening type which means if you get the surface hardness up high enough for a bearing to ride on it, the shaft is too brittle to be useful. If you don't get it hard enough, then the bearing wears a groove in it. 1541H is a higher strength than stock alloy and is a case hardenable material.

After considerable amount of reading regarding 1541 Manganese Vs 4340 Chromoly axles, I choose the chromoly. The Cromoly axle is a little more expensive but not by much. Yes both billets have their specific qualities so I would recommend either one depending on your own gut feeling. I ended up purchasing the CROWN Chromoly DANA 35 - 27 spine axle (Drum Brakes W/O ABS Tone Sensor Ring) Kit: Model RT23001 for $519 CDN Total from JustJeeps which includes FREE delivery. Performance Jeep parts are NOT cheep in Canada these days but that product is fairly priced Vs the competition.

Have to thank the Forum Members whom pitched in to help me make the decision I did to purchase the product I did - Thanks RON

The problem with ignoring sound advice from those that know what they are talking about is you listened to idiots and wind up with crap that does this.

OK Blokes - I still have time to cancel the order and go with the 1541 Manganese Axles, I need just more convincing before I change it.

I was looking at the Rolled end of the Chromoly Axle that sticks into the carrier and holds the C-Clips which CROWN advertises and did not consider the Outer End of the axle tube's which carry the Bearing load. One thing I avoid doing is drowning my Axles in Mud or dirty Swamp Water ;o)

The damage I see in your Pic's appears to me as the result of a Seized Bearing most likely caused by leaking seals and burying your axles in mud - Your telling me that a 1541 Manganese Axle with a Harder Surface is immune to that ?

You have until Midnight tonight to change my mind - I've requested a shipping hold from the Suppler until I'm further convinced - Thanks RON

PS: I plan on running 5:13 Gears with Lunch Box Lockers and 33" tires. This will be a High Country Gravel Rocky Back Woods Bush Machine and plan to go around Mud holes I've an Axe, Chain Saw, Straps, Jack and Super Powerful Wench just like my Wife was - God Bless her Sole - ;o)

This does not mean I know every thing and super appreciate your Inputs.

You need 1541H shafts since on Dana 35 shafts the bearing rides on the axle. For a Dana 30 you need 4140 chromoly.

His profile says he's in the process of installing a lunchbox in it too. Correct me if I'm wrong, but even a 1541H 27 spline shaft would probably not hold up to a locker.

OK - I have TEN Factory Motive Gear MG31135 Right and MG31136 Left 1541H Manganese Steel Dana-35 - 27 spline Axle Shafts in an Amazon Cart right now. It's a pity JustJeeps only have CROWN Chrolmoly Axles which means I will have to cancel the JustJeeps order and go with Amazon - The Prices are about equivalent.

If I don't hear anyone supporting the Chromoly axles I will purchase the 1541H Manganese Steel rear axles ;o)

Thanks Greg - I was thinking the same thing about 1541H Manganese Steel NOT holding up to a Lunch Box Locker.
This will NOT be a MUD Puppy. I want it to be a Mountain Climber with 5:13's and 33" tires and if I accidentally BUCK the system with Lunch Box's Front and Rear, I want the Axles to handle it.

ONLY 2 hours left to Midnight - Do I Stay or Do I Go - OK - I will extend the dead line to NOON TOMORROW.

Good Night and see you at High Noon tomorrow - My preference for a Chromoly rear axle is all about the application as to what I want my TJ to do without breaking ;o)

When I developed the Dana 35 C-clip eliminator for Superior Axle, Foote made the first sets of test shafts out of 1541H without telling anyone. Only after we sent out test sets to folks for them to abuse did they finally reveal the alloy. None of them failed, all were 27 spline used with lockers.

Given the pictures of cromoly axles that came out of the Dana 35, what more would convince you to use them in this application?

Also, who is selling manganese steel axles?

My rebuttal is that axle damage shown in them Pic's is the result of Mud Pupping, destroying the seal thus contaminating and seizing the bearing which in turn skids the bearing on the axle shaft and damaging it; yet, some Members profess that a 1541H Manganese Steel shaft is immune to this - I would say yes for a little time longer before you realize the bearing is shot. I say the composition of the axle shaft is NOT the cause of the damaged to the Axle shafts as shown in them Pic's. Hell I still have the stock OEM rear axles in my TJ after over 250,000 kilometers on her and YES I have changed the Outer Seals and Bearing a couple of times but have never damage to the bearing surfaces on the outer shaft. You're lucky the outer axle bearing tube housing isn't damaged as well. Changing Axle seals and Differential Lube regularly is a must if you Mud Puppy. I will risk bearing my axles in clean water a times but not Muddy Waters.

Just one Mud insurgence will cause damage not immediately but with in a few months if you do not change the Seals and Diff-Fluid.
By the way the damaged bearing doesn't have to be completely seized it just might start complaining while it pounds the axle and if you leaved it too long - OUCH !

Also answering as to who is selling manganese steel axles - It's in my post you quoted ;o)

Hey I'm 78 with a Class A Automotive License which I gave up paying dues for years ago and a JEEP is NOT the only ride I've owned.
My Hi-Mileage 2001 Jeep TJ Sport is not PRETTY and has some RUST and the frame is solid (Amazing for a Chrysler Product) but it's Mechanically Sound and doesn't burn a drop of oil between yearly Oil Changes regardless of the mileage I put on her. That AMC 4.0L 6 is all what Enthusiasts claim it to be.
