Another Cooling System Issue

So last summer my original radiator blew. Huge crack in the top, snapped the upper hose bung.. it was a mess. I replaced the radiator, water pump and thermostat, didn’t buy the hoses even though I should have but I figured I could get by for another year and for the most part, it made it almost exactly a year. That said, it hasn’t been a year without issue unfortunately.

Ever since the rad. popped and everything was replaced, I’ve not been able to maintain pressure or capacity in my rediator. My cooling system is losing coolant somewhere, but I can’t seem to locate where. There are no signs of visible leaking anywhere on the motor, frame, radiator, water pump, thermostat housing, or heater core. There is no coolant in the engine oil, ever. I’ve replaced the oil in my jeep 4 times since the radiator blew, ne not one time have I seen any signs of water getting into the engines lubrication system. That said, it appears as though oil is getting into my cooling system though, doesn’t it. (See pictures)

My jeep never over heats, I mean never. I can run in stop and go traffic all afternoon in scorching Oklahoma heat and barely break 210-ish. I am at a complete loss. Now, here is what I do know:

  1. Losing coolant somewhere
  2. During winter, turning on my defroster actually caused my windshield to be covered in fog. In fact, it’s like steam is constantly emanating from the center dash vent.
  3. Never has the passenger floorboard become wet.
  4. Thermostat doesn’t ever open when attempting to purge the system of air. Doesn’t matter how long she idles. It’s like she’s never getting to temp.
  5. I can “fill & purge” the system, top of the tank, a week later, there isn’t any coolant in my upper hose.
The pictures below were taken last week when my jeep died in a parking lot while idling. She suddenly idled extremely rough and made a concerning knocking sound. I shut her down. She wasn’t even hot. Oil pressure was perfect, oil level is great and oil is clean and free from moisture exposure. The jeep will not start up again.

I will be starting with a compression test tomorrow afternoon and probably pulling the top end off this weekend to check for cracked or warped head and/or blown head gasket. I’m guessing the heater core might have gone out which is likely where the coolant is going, but still doesn’t explain the no-start issue. I will update this post with results from a compression test as well as diagnostic codes. If anyone has had similar expenses, please feel free to share what you’ve learned and/or where to focus my diagnostics. Thanks in advance.

I'd get a compression gas test kit before I pulled the head.

My guess is you have a pinhole leak in your heater core.

Also possible your new radiator failed. Don't rule out new parts in troubleshooting.

If you had a pinhole leak in your heater core it would not cause oil in your coolant.

Right. I'm not 100 percent sure oil is getting into the coolant. I'd like to see a combustion gas test. Based on those results a compression and leakdown test... although if you find combustion gasses in the coolant you're pulling the head anyways. I'd probably still do a compression test for baseline numbers.

Losing coolant and fogging the windshield sure points to a heater core leak.

And I agree a combustion gas test is a whole lot easier than pulling the head. You can rent the test kit from the local auto parts store and just pay for the test fluid - it was round $8 when I did it a couple years ago. The test fluid was so sensitive it changed color when I breathed on it.
 
Pressure test first. Pump to 18PSI and observe. Pressure should not drop at all in the first 15-20 minutes. If it drops slowly, pump back up and use a good light to fully inspect all visible coolant connections in the engine compartment for leaks. If you find and address leaks, repeat the test until the pressure stabilizes.

If nothing visible is leaking, I agree with others that it's likely a small heater core leak. Inspect the AC drain on the firewall to see if there is any coolant residue.

Do you know what that substance is in the coolant? It may be stop-leak. Since you need to replace the hoses, it would be a good time to really flush everything out. It helps to open the block plug too.

i am today years old when i learned of a “Block Plug”. Where is this plug located? I made the ass-umption any “plugs” would be freeze plugs and not technically removable/serviceable.

I learned years ago while spinning wrenches for Harley not to assume new parts are always good parts. Great advice!! Thank you Sir.

Darn thing takes an 8mm square drive. I'd like to punch whoever came up with that moronic idea. There's a sunex tool for it.

I'm leaning towards pinhole in heater core + stopleak + maybe incompatible coolants.

That is about the dumbest damn thing I’ve heard of on our “American”-made vehicles.
