My wife has a 2002 Jeep Wrangler automatic inline six 4.0L that is having an issue. The vehicle was not driven for a few weeks, so we got a new battery for it. The starter is less than a year old, and all the lights come on the dashboard properly. There are no P codes that come on, but the vehicle will not start. We tested the gas tank for the buzzing sound, and it buzzed, so we're not looking at a fuel pump issue. While looking at a few things, we may be wondering if it is the crankshaft position sensor. Where, exactly, is it in the vehicle?

the crank sensor is on the top of the bellhousing on the driver side for an 02 automatic. You can usually reach the plug by reaching behind the intake manifold, but it's probably easier to remove/install it from underneath.

What's the battery voltage? What's it drop to when you try and crank it over?
New batteries are rarely changed. Get it on a battery charger. I put mine on a tender often.

The RPM needle stays at zero. Do you have a photo of where it would be, by chance?
As for your location, I can remember when 289 was two lanes in Frisco!

If it's that, where exactly is that part? It attempts to crank over, but does not do so.
It cranks over, but just won't start. If it were a "click click click", we'd know it was the battery.
It's in the steering column. It's what connects the tumbler to the ignition switch.
Mine broke pulling up to a wheeling trip. I could turn the ignition on, but not start the Jeep.
I ended up putting the Jeep on run and jumpering the starter to complete the trip.

I don't have a photo, but if you have somebody up top, you can jiggle the wires from below and you'll find it pretty easily. It's around 10-11 oclock if you think of the bellhousing as a clock, where 9 oclock is pointing out to the driver's side.
I've had the same experience with the actuator. I could turn the key but it would turn the engine. Placed it in run and jumped it and everything worked fine.

Try spraying something flammable in the throttle body. Starting fluid or brake cleaner. See if it'll run a bit.
Might be a good time to check for spark and check fuel pressure.

Using the clock setup, that might help me find it correctly. I presume that is from looking under and not from looking down?

I think this will be obvious once you get your head in the right place. I'm about to sound very condescending, but I don't mean it that way. Do you know what/where the bellhousing is? If you are under the jeep, behind the transmission, looking toward the front of the jeep, find the leftmost point of the bellhousing. Follow the edge of the bellhousing and trace it upward toward the top of the bellhousing. If you didn't find the crank position sensor along the way, you should delete your account.

. But yeah, it's right there. The wires for it go up into the engine compartment, but it's usually easier to unplug it from above. The pigtail on it is less than 12" so it's not too far from the sensor itself.

I googled the bellhousing so I could see a photo, and I remember when I was underneath, I saw that piece, so this should help considerably.
