Trying to understand my rear differentials

Sadly second hand parts here are few and far between, and also very exspensive, and I'm happy keeping it with the 3.07 ratio, I've no plans to add larger tyres or to go rock crawling, a rare bit of light green laneing will be the most this jeep will do in my ownership, unless I win the lotto

Not at all. If the carrier bearings look good, that would be the best and most economical way to go. So, ring and pinion, pinion bearings and seal, possibly carrier bearings, possibly axle bearings and seal.

Stupid question time... I know there's axle bearings at the hub end of the alxle is there a bearing at the diff end also ? Obviously besides the ones inside the diff?

No, just the splines.

Yes, the carrier has its own bearings that it spins on, they're what support the carrier. It's hard to get them on & off so they're not damaged in the process so unless you're good at that process, new carrier bearings are the way to go. And used ring & pinion gears are never a good idea. First, new gears don't cost that much. Second and more importantly, used gears are MUCH harder to get set up properly so they won't go out in 1000 miles. Most shops charge more to set up used gears because they take so much more time and some shops won't install used gears at all because they seldom set up well enough.

FWIW, I think Jerry and I are agreeing on the overall setup. No, there are no bearings on the diff end of the axles, just splines, but yes, there are carrier bearings as he said. Sounds like you just need a master install kit and ring and pinion gears. ~$450 plus install. That's why I said, just re-gear both, but you could do just the rear. I understand what you're trying to do.

The cheapest option is to just put the carrier with the broken ring tooth back in and keep rolling.

Ye it's rubish, only had it two months and not even done 200 miles in it yet, still I love it, and the rest of it is up together now so hopefully once it's fixed I can get some happy miles in it

Along the edge of the Ring gear is a set of numbers. At the end of that list would be something like "43x11' divide those two for the ratio.

You should have some play, as you rotate the driveshaft by hand it should delay and then engage both directions. You can’t tell by looking if the backlashing is correct. You have to buy some gear paint at Napa or whatever you’ve got, paint 5 or 6 teeth and rotate the driveshaft under simulated load and look at the pattern.

So I've pricing up the parts here in the UK and obviously there not cheap, so was thinking about ordering from the US, the master install and ring and pinion is about £650. GBP here and is made by Crown, I was also going to change all the U joints, front wheel bearing's, so could anyone recommend the best place for me to go (who will ship to the uk) for good quality parts and at a fair price

Allens Off Road will ship inter. but you have to contact him directly per his site. Not sure if he does the wheel bearings and u joints, do you have Amazon available to you?

Yes have amazon altough sadly most of the goods in the US say their not available when I try and make the purchase
