Trying to learn about TJs and the one I bought in particular. Spent the morning reading the excellent thread on tummy tuck. So I go look at my jeep and I see the skid plate is dropped. What possible reason could there be for this?
If your TJ has a lift on it, the rear drive shaft has changed to a more severe angle. The purpose of the drop is to mitigate the angle. Some kits come with those drop spacers, some make their own. And some lifts don't require the TC to be dropped. What are you running for a suspension?View attachment 52236

When the skid plate is dropped, the transmission and transfer case follow it down.Anyway. There is no noticeable vibration. It's a nice smooth ride on the freeway. So you think the transfer case was dropped and that's why the skid plate is dropped? I'll have to take it off and see what's up there.
The transmission mount is on the skid plate, and the transfer case is bolted to the back of the transmission. Both would drop if the skid plate is lowered. You can remove the spacers and see if you experience any vibrations afterward. As mentioned prior, some lift kits come with transfer case spacers, whether they are needed or not, and some owners install them because it says to in the lift instructions, without regard to whether they are needed. So, you're concluding that because the belly pan is dropped, the tc must be dropped also? I kind of knew that buying a jeep that is not completely stock would be a guessing game as to what has been done, how well, and what else did that affect. Completely stock TJ jeeps are pretty rare in So Cal.
Take what off and see if there are no vibrations?
Most TJ owners don't like the look of the oem skid plate as it sits without it being lowered; plus it can drag over objects when wheeling, stock, and will do so more when lowered. If it doesn't bother you to have it on there, run with it until it does (bother you, that is).Because I bought it with 31" tires doesn't mean that's what the previous owner was running. Is there any issue with the dropped TC& trans with 2" lift and 31" tires?
