Kicking the tires on a Rubicon

I paid $19k for a 06 Rubicon with a 5 inch lift, aftermarket front and rear bumpers, electric step/sliders and only 21k miles. Zero rust. 33 inch tires. Not a scratch on it. And I paid that a year and a half ago. Deals are out there. If I had it to do over again, I would have bought a stock Rubicon.

Biggest thing to check on a Rubicon is that’s it's a Rubicon. 6th digit of vin is a 6. Disc brakes all the way around. Lockers.

That 03 looked nice. Somebody knows how to use a camera.

Expect to pay a chunk man. You need to move on it when you find it.

Aside from that, the only thing you really need to make sure of is that the Rubicon axles work. Put it in 4 LO, flip the locker switch up (to engage the front locker), then flip it down (to engage the rear). If the locker lights are flashing on the dash, it means that the lockers aren't engaged and you need to roll a bit more forward (like 1-2 mph at most) to engage them. Once the lights are solid, your axles are locked.

Ahhh, that's right! I always forget with that dang switch. Would have been a lot easier if they just wired two separate switches.

how can I be sure of proper locker operations?

drive it in a paved parking lot. 4LO. Do a lock to lock figure 8. Then lock both difs and try it..... you'll know.

This is internet bullshit. Sure it might be a problem but it has been inflated beyond belief. My bet, it was an issue with SOME, maybe MANY 4.0L engines for a few years. But if you are buying today? You are buying one that has had the problem corrected.... many by factory recall like mine.... or you are buying a good one which never had the problem..... which no one can define.

But if OPDA is your trigger, yeah buy a TJ with a 5speed.

The Impact Orange TJ that was totaled had a lifetime warranty. The requirements for being applicable were to be less than ten years old and under 100k miles. I'm sure they're the same way at Heggs and since I was looking at older models, I don't think this will be an option any longer. It's OK, I am happy with the rig I have now!!
