What do you think the TJ should have come with from the factory (that you added on later) ?

OK, here is a fun Q/A thread. What items did you add to your TJ that you think should have come from the factory? Anything that came on the factory that you thought did not belong in there in terms of looks or quality or function? Anything you think they got it right on the later models (JK/JL) that they missed in the TJ? Please include a short justification if you can. Please also remember that stuff like fancy LED headlights may not have been an option back in the day.

I almost wanted to exclude bigger tires and lift from this question, but being that most people go to bigger tires (which needs a lift in most cases), it's perhaps fair that it should be open for this topic. This is not in my list below, but see #2

My nominations are:

  1. deeper axle gearing for the 42RLE equipped models - this one is a no brainer
  2. highline fenders - I suspect many people will be OK installing going with slightly bigger tires without a lift if they had highline fenders.
  3. tummy tuck - for people who go wheeling, this perhaps will be huge
  4. Cable shifter for the transfer case - I recently had a savvy shifter installed, and I'll never understand why the TJ did not come from the factory this way
  5. Better halogen headlights - the stock sealed beams are pretty bad. How did they ever approve it for release it I will never understand.
  6. Better way to mount the mirrors - if you are making a vehicle where people can take the doors off, there needs to be a proper option from the factory for mounting (or relocating) the mirrors
  7. Beefier interior storage - the TJ should really have come with something similar to tuffy console for the interior. On a vehicle that you expect people to take doors/top off you need atleast one well protected area.

I am curious as to what everyone else thinks.

Cable shifter: They put a cable shifter in the JK, the plastic clip that holds it in or the plastic bushings on the end fail and it stops shifting.

Sealed beam headlights: they went to a non-sealed beam unit on the JK, the optics were so bad the stock lights on my LJ were significantly better. In fact the jk fog lights were better than the high beam.

Higher fenders: they did this on the JK (stock it will take 33s if they aren't wide) but they held them on with plastic clips that snap when you look at em funny

Tummy tuck: they brought everything higher but used a trans crossmember made of tinfoil that gets bent out of shape it it comes within several feet of a rock. They also used a T-bar of plate about an inch wide and called it a transmission skid because when they had a slightly larger (I own larger frying pans) skid the trans would overheat.

Consensus: You should never expect the factory to get the upgrades you want correct.

What do I want? And option for more power and the drive train to stand up to it.

There must have been a time
when we could have said no.

I was in Chicago for 5 years. It was a great city to live in. I was happy to leave, but always enjoy going back to visit.

That is funny actually. I currently live in Chicago for college and plan on moving to Colorado as soon as I graduate in a few years. I can't stand living in the city right now (and there isn't really anywhere to go wheeling around here!).
