OK...So far ( after 50 miles) The new (reman) tranny seems to be workin great...Now, back to diff gears.. This gal will not see more then 100 miles a year on road, so I'm goin for the lowest gears for just creepin around my ranch..I put this out there awhile ago but know I miss placed the file..Got a 30 in front and 35 in rear..Would like to put lockers in her ( reasonalbly priced) and max 33 tires..Would really like to see her walk slow....Any Ideas?..Shes got 3.73 now and was thinkin maybe goin to 5.13 or deeper gears...I like slow...Trials bikes still rule...

My 5 spd has 410s and I would have no issue keeping that if I was crawling all the time. 4Lo is plenty. I also run 33s with the 2.5L engine.

Figuring out the idea ratio depends on which transmission you have (you didn't mention that), what size tires, and which engine you have.

You didn't mention which engine or transmission you have.

As above, don't install any locker into your stock Dana 35 axle. Installing a Super 35 kit from Revolution Gear into your Dana 35 would make it strong enough for even 35's plus the kit includes a choice of lockers.

For 33's and your 42RLE automatic, you want nothing less than 4.88 and 5.13 would be ideal. Either of those would produce good acceptable highway engine rpms.

For my type of ...Offroading...Do I really need axles??..Had a new 03 rubi stock ( 44?) and wasn't too impressed..My drives nowdays are pretty much mild compared to...THE OLD DAYS...Just lookin to gear her down and lock her up if necessary..shot of the old gal.. Jeep1.webp

Hmm...How bout no lockers and just gears?..Not hittin the rocks, but will be rollin around some fun country...

X2 to this! Definitely 5.13, which is as deep as you can go on that axle setup anyways.

It will be perfect with 33s though!
Thanks, Chris...I pretty much slow drive nowdays and love getting out there...But ALWAYS love getting back..Great forum, dude..

With a locker axles are more of a need than a want. Stock 35 axles and lockers aren't a good combo. For just trailing you could use a Truetrac on the stock axles. While not a locker they work very well in all conditions other than wheelin where you are consistently lifting a tire. I run one in the rear and an Aussie locker in front and it does very well.

No lockers...remember the fact, you are 2WD with lockers. You will get stuck in wet pinestraw.

I agree. I would never do a regear without jumping for some sort of locker. You're already in there anyways.

A few years ago I had my ARB locker pump go out (turned out to be an electrical problem, nothing major) so my lockers weren't functional. While waiting on parts to arrive in the mail, I pulled a little too far over on a dirt road and got stuck in the smallest snowy ditch possible. I only had 2 useless wheels spinning. While I sat there waiting for my Dad to come pull me 2 feet backwards with his Jeep, I remembered why I got lockers in the first place.

Moral of the story, if you're opening everything up to put gears in, just go for lockers. In your situation, I'd go for a super 35 kit, 5.13's, and some sort of locker. Hell, if it is only a ranch Jeep, just weld it up.
