Transfer case plugs having trouble removing.

I want to replace the fluid in my transfer case but cannot get the fill and drain plugs out. Used as long an extension as would fit in the space available, but no luck. Any suggestions?
 
It just won't budge no matter how hard you push? Try soaking it in PB blaster overnight.

In addition to that, you may just need to see if you can get a long pipe in there to get the leverage you need.
 
No one in our small town stocks PB blaster, so I applied WD40 waited an hour, rigged up an extension that I could get a pipe on and the fill plug finally started to turn. Drain plug was not as bad. The rest of the process was uneventful. Like everything else on this jeep, it looked like it had been a while since the last routine maintainence. Next will be the differentials and I should be set for winter.

I found a very small amount of anti seize on those really helps with removing them the next time. I use that stuff a lot!

WD-40 is not really a good penetrating fluid. Get on Amazon and order some Aero Kroil penetrating fluid. It is amazing stuff.

It's also worth investing into a impact gun. Heck harbor freight's $50 impact is pretty damn good. It gets every bolt off for me and it's what I used on my t-case fill plugs. They were tight too.
 
Sounds like you got them off ok. For future reference I would just suggest that nobody even think about removing the drain plug until they have the fill plug off... for reasons that should be fairly obvious.
 
WD-40 is not really a good penetrating fluid. Get on Amazon and order some Aero Kroil penetrating fluid. It is amazing stuff.

It's also worth investing into a impact gun. Heck harbor freight's $50 impact is pretty damn good. It gets every bolt off for me and it's what I used on my t-case fill plugs. They were tight too.

Good idea. I'm planning on getting a air impact before starting in on the differentials, lots of bolts and if they are like many of the others on this jeep, they will be tight.

Be wary, not all impact guns are created equally. When some say they're good to 300 ft-lbs, that often means they are not even close to being powerful enough for anything actually requiring 300 ft-lbs. of power. And a 450 ft-lb. model is going to be better for heavy-duty work.

If you are going with an air-actuated impact wrench, make sure it is a "double anvil" model, they don't cost that much more than a single-anvil which is barely strong enough to get out of its own way.

Same issue with electric impact wrenches but even more so. Low battery voltage impact wrenches are often little more powerful than battery powered drills or screwdrivers. 18v is the bare minimum I'd go for. Make sure the battery type is lithium-ion which has a good life. Nickel-cadmium are the worst to buy with nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) poor compromise whose battery life is more like a ni-cad than a lithium-ion.
