I am replacing my 4.0 and wanted to know, how do I know if my motor mounts need to be replaced. I have a 1997 with 186,000 miles on it. I have attached some pictures.
Thanks for your help.

If you're going through the trouble of replacing your engine, why not just throw new mounts in? With 186,000 miles it only makes sense to do it. It'll be a lot easier right now than it will be once the motor is back in.

jodomcfrodo That's what I was thinking. Being a newish Jeep owner, I guess I just need someone to confirm my thoughts. Is there anything else I should be replacing while I am replacing the engine?
Thanks,
Igoo65

I'm no expert but I certainly would not be worried about those based on these pictures. Like @jodomcfrodo said: you're replacing the whole engine, why not just replace the mounts while you're at it? Out of curiosity, why are you replacing the engine in the first place?

It doesn't need to be replaced, but given how easy they are to replace (and how cheap), you'd be stupid not to replace them.

I would replace them too, Craig. Might as well while the engine is out. I'd go ahead and do a 1" motor mount lift too. At 4" of lift it surely wouldnt hurt!

danof76 The PO had used Barqs stop leak on a cracked block. I was changing fluids when I bought it and noticed the antifreeze was a nasty brown color. I flushed the system several times thinking it was rust and old antifreeze. I ended up flushing the stop leak out of the block and I found the crack where it was leaking. I originally thought I had a leaking head gasket and I had the head rebuilt and new gaskets, just to find out it was still leaking above the second to last freeze plug. Now I have a rebuilt head sitting on my shelf, because the engine builder wouldn't use my head for warranty issues. Lucky me! I am now replacing the engine. The lessons I learned, don't be such a clean freak and don't trust a previous owner, when they say the vehicle is in great condition!

Tyler,
I was thinking about the motor mount lift, but wont that put my transfer case at more of an angle with the driveshaft? Also can I do the motor mount lift with out a body lift? Will I have to lift my radiator shroud and radiator?

Should be just enough room to lift without a body lift, and yes you would have to move the shroud with one. A MML will help with the angle of the driveshaft. It will also raise your oil pan up a hair. Minor benefits, no drawbacks.

Thanks Tyler. Is there a brand I should use over other brands? I was looking at M.O.R.E. bomb proof and Brown Dog. Any others worth looking at?
Thanks,
Igoo65

Both of those are very well liked, @Chris seems to recommend M.O.R.E. himself, I haven't heard anything bad about Brown Dog, am gonna go with them personally for the pure shallow fact that they're yellow and would match my Jeep.

Thanks dano76. I like MORE stuff just for the shallow reason they are made in Colorado and I already have their engine/skid plate. :)
Thanks,

I think they all accomplish the same thing. I run JKS which is a colorful aluminum block at $80-90. I believe @jjvw runs a similar aluminum block at half the price from ebay. Brown dog has a lot of support but is a bit more expensive. Whatever floats your boat. Brown dog will at least replace your existing bushings whereas JKS (for example) re-uses your existing bushings.

My blocks are Rough Country that I got as an open box discount on eBay. They are a boring raw aluminum color. :(

Well I ordered the Brown Dog MML. I got them for $99. The JKS was $89. 4 Wheel Parts and Predator kept trying to sell me the Daystar for $89, but they have poly bushings. That's a no no in my book.
Thanks for the help on this one!

Why Brown Dog over MORE? I mean all things being equal it seemed it was down to aforementioned shallow reasons.

It actually came down to cost and availability. I can get the brown dog for $99 and delivered this Saturday. The MORE was $153 and wouldn’t be here for 1-1/2 weeks even though they are only in Delta, CO. Which is a 5 hr drive from me.
