What the heck is this thing?

I think you can figure it out from this picture. You only have to drill one hole to install. Not the greatest picture, I know.

I went to a bike shop and asked for a cheap shifter, payed a little too much but supported a local shop. I think it's a generic Sunrace non-indexed shifter with the red disc like the SLM10. They are designed to fit on handlebars so the clamp is large, I just cut a hardwood crescent to make up the difference. Same with the cable, they just cut whatever length you need. I looped the cable from the shifter back to the firewall, around to the driver side knee bar in a loop and then back to the steering support if that makes sense. Just estimate the length. You need to find the threaded part that mounts in the steering support, I made mine from a bolt. Basically just drilled two holes in a bolt, half a little bigger than the cable and half a little bigger than the black cable cover. A bike shop might have them, it just needs to hold the cable end onto the support. Drill a single hole in the pedal and pass the cable through. I just used a model airplane wheel collar to make a cable stop but anything would work. When you press on the gas normally the pedal just slides forward on the cable. Just ask if you have questions, I'm not the greatest at how-tos if that wasn't obvious already.

Having trouble with installation. Teraflex instructions are garbage. Got everything connected but hand throttle isn’t throttling. I tried pulling the wire as tight as I could but still won’t throttle unless I push the lever are the way then it throttles too much. Is there too much slack? It’s so tight that the wire pulls my center console up when the lever is pulled. Is the connection at the other end not good? It’s a loop with the aluminum crimp.

Can you post pics of the install?

Here you go. Fished wire through boot and center console, up and under through firewall, looped around cable placed in holder, hollow wire holder screwed into bracket next to gas pedal and cruise control, wire looped next to gas pedal connection.

For the pic labeled "wire", where is the cable shield? The cable should be in the shield for the entire run from the lever to the throttle cable mount and bare from there to the throttle linkage. It's the shield that gives the cable rigidity.

It’s not long enough. So I ran it from the hollow screw all the back to the lever but it stops under the steering column.

It will be long enough when you decide you want it to work.
Is there another closer firewall access I could use? I used the one that is above the clutch pedal.

Edit: basically you’re saying just keep messing around with it til the length works

If you are talking about a hole with a grommet, then there is one right in front of the shifter to the left of the heater duct. There is also the alternate method that pagrey showed where you don't even go into the engine compartment.

No, I backed up what was said about the length of the cable housing needing to go from the thumb lever to the actuation point. If the cable housing is not restrained on both ends, the cable has nothing to react against and you may as well tie a string to the throttle body and pull on it because you are not using a "cable", just a very strong string.

Ok got it. The sleeve needs to be from hand throttle to actuation point for it to work properly.

Is it possible you are having trouble because you have the extra spring on the throttle body, the one with the grey clip? Do all Jeeps have that? I think it is supposed to make the pedal really stiff so it's easier to control off-road but with the hand throttle you wont need it. Maybe somebody with more experience would know for sure it's not an issue.

Nevermind, looks like you got it.

Apparently the cable sleeve has to run from end to end for it to work so I will try to play around with that. If that doesn’t work then I will try your method

Ok

More helpful is knowing the parts of what we refer to as a cable.
wire cable inside is the actual cable and it can be solid like some of the Vernier cables posted above or twisted wire cable like found in most bicycle cables.
cable slides back and forth inside the cable housing
sleeves can be the parts that crimp onto the cable to form a loop
sleeves can be the parts that form the end fittings for the cable to attach it to holes or the shifter and they can be the end fittings that just slip over the cable housing to finish the cut end.
end stop is either a crimp sleeve style or adjustable with a set screw threaded into the side of the cable stop or end stop

Got it to work. Rerouted it using the grommet access by the shifter and there was plenty of length for the cable housing to reach from lever to actuation point. Thanks all for the help!
