Tunes in a TJ

Looking at upgrading my stereo this weekend for my 2006 TJ. If I am reading this right, there are three (3) sets of 5.25's in the Jeep, correct? Front (with adapter), door panels, and sound bar? So I should buy 3 sets of Polk's?

The factory installed two 4x6 speakers up front and two 5.25" speakers in the rear. I'd get adapters for the front to convert them to round 5.25" speakers which will sound better, like the Polk DB522. Adapters are nothing more than inexpensive sheet metal. I'd run DB652 in the rear, your rear speaker pods should be able to handle the slightly larger 6.5" diameter. They dropped right into my older TJ's sound bar.

The larger speakers will not fit in the speaker pods without a decent amount of modification or longer screws to make them sit on top of the opening. They fit in the older speaker bars though. I'm out of town this week or I'd post a picture of how I had to mount them in my '05 and my daughter's '04 was exactly the same. Stick with the 5.25" in all four locations.

I'd rather have the larger 6.5" sit on top of the opening than install the 5.25" size. Not to mention it wouldn't be hard to enlarge the opening so the speaker sat inside the opening like the 5.25" did.

5.25s up front with said adapter, 6.5s in soundbar 6x9s in the back. 2000 watt amp under rear seat. No top no problem!

So it looks like I bought an extra pair of 5.25 as I thought there were speakers in the door as well. Went with the Polk DB 521. What's the difference between the 521 and 522's. Also plan to add amps and sub in back. Good stuff all, thanks for your input.

I have a custom box from FatboxUSA and two 12" alpine type R subs and holy crap it's a match made in heaven ha. I wouldn't recommend any box but theirs. 1" MDF and specifically tuned for ur specific sub. Has tj shaking like crazy with only my 900 CT Sounds amp

If you bought 5.25" speakers for the pods they'll drop right in. If you got the 6.5" speakers make sure to get a set of longer screws. I'll post pictures on Monday when I'm finally home.

For what its worth, I install a poly fill fabric. I get it from Meijer or wallyworld, but its great inside the rear soundbar for creating a crisp sound. Eliminating that echo sound of a hollow box really made the drive better for me. plus its super easy and next to nothing in cost.

I did this too.

I didn't want to spend the cash on speakers, so I opted for a $10 pillow from Goodwill and took out all the polyfill and stuffed my sound bar and behind my front speakers. Actually make a difference too!

This is a picture of my Polk db651s (6.5) in my '05. I took the adapter ring from the kit that Crutchfield supplied and, using longer screws, attached it through the stock holes in the sound pod. Then I attached the speaker to the ring using the supplied screws since (1) they didn't line up with the factory holes and (2) they were too large for the opening. This way if I need to return it to stock I haven't put any additional holes in the pod itself. If I didn't care about that then I would have tried to use self tapping screws to attach to the surface of the pod.

Here is my daughter's '04 with the Polk db522 (5.25) speakers and they sit completely flush with the stock guard.
