Diabetes is such a horrible disease

I was trying to help here by dictating meals, dinner was a salad, meat veggie and carb. she hated it, didnt like the idea that every meal was a 4 course dinner, now she buys hamburger helper and that is dinner. I could not keep up with eating like that. but when we did , her A1C was a low 6, where she used to be mid 7's. now she is in the 8's.
Hopefully there's a balance somewhere that you two can find. I mean, you can attain great physical results by starving the soul, but there's a cost to that as well.

If she hasn't tried it before, it might be worth seeing if something like a veggie pasta could fit in some meals. It's not a zero carb, but it's lower carb than your full pasta. Personally, I like this stuff:

T1 here as well. Another product to try is dream fields pasta. There is no difference in taste from other brands but it is higher in fiber and for some people you don’t have to take as much insulin per carb. I personally only need 1/3 the insulin I have to take with other brands which is pretty incredible.

Hang in there and keep trying to help your wife make adjustments. A closed loop artificial pancreas system isn’t far away. Sounds like she will greatly benefit from that type of system.

Living in the Pizza capital of the world - NYC area (sorry Chicago) I fully understand...now my meals are sauteed veggies, a protein (unbreaded meat) or a hamburger with either a lettuce bun or no bun. I have pretty much stopped counting fat and calories and was dropping at least a pound a week. Carbs kill everything for a diabetic.

Google cauliflower pizza. Itll change your life.

....

My friends wife is a diabetic taking huge am9unts of insulin a day. Then she did the keto diet, and now is off her insulin.

Not being diabetic for 50 years of my life has been my biggest challenge. I love my ice cream and candy. So over time I have learned to curb some of these cravings with smaller portions and watching what type of ice cream or candy I eat. Right now I am fighting a tooth infection and taking antibiotics which will both raise your blood sugar.
Eating better and losing weight have been my key things. I feel for all of you dealing with Type 1 or family members with Type 1. My dad & grandpa both had adult onset Type 2 and here about 5 years ago my son was diagnosed with it also.

I have some of the cauliflower crusts off Amazon and absolutely hated it, greasy, soggy. I use Carbquick and make my own crust. It also makes biscuits, and pancakes among many other things.

I had to learn to eat to my meter, and things definitely surprise me. can't have white potatoes at all, but can have some small reds. I am able to eat sandwiches if made with sourdough? but the one that blew my mind was shrimp

You cant eat shrimp? Huh, who would have thunk...

Every time I eat shrimp, it pegs my blood sugar.
I found an article that talks about how they dope the shrimp to make them bigger.
good thing I am also anaphylaxis allergic to shrimp as well as a diabetic, I am a real problem child when I go to the restaurant with my restrictions to how things are prepared and what I can't eat.

Sorry to hear about your wife, man. Your advice is sound though. I'm 29 and had a health scare late last year. Ended up being nothing, but it kicked my ass into gear. Diet change and exercise 5x a week.

We're only given one body. We should be good stewards of what goes in and out.

Low carb pizza crust that tastes awesome:
2 cups shredded mozzarella or parmesan cheese and 4 eggs. Mix and smooth on a 13X9 baking pan and cook for 20 minutes on 425 degrees.
Apply desired sauce (we like Newman's Own sauce ... forget what flavor but it's not actually sold as pizza sauce) and favorite toppin's, bake at 425 for 10 minutes, chow down. Friends who don't count carbs love it. (y)

My mother is a type 1 diabetic and my youngest daughter was diagnosed when she was as 12. It is a hard disease to live with but I am also amazed at the changes over the last 50 years and hopeful for the continued progress in the future. My daughter's pump talks to her glucose monitor and can bolus for her. That was unheard of even a few years ago.

My wife was one of the lucky ones that developed Type 1 at 38. Her endo told her that something like one out of ten million people develop type 1 late in life. We knew something was wrong when she dropped 26 pounds in two months, but had no idea what was going on. She only weighed 106 when that happened. She is doing much better now, and has regained the weight, and looks healthy again. It was hard for her to learn how to eat when you never had to worry about what you ate in the past. But at least it is something that she can control, and she is doing a great job at it. Her A1C is around 6.2 to 6.5 and the doc is very happy with that.

Y’all have my sympathy! VA says I have high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, and a bad attitude

One of the wife's doctors upped her water pill dosage, just a little, it was enough to stop the painful swelling, but now they have to closely monitor her kidney functions.

Well the wife scared the shit out of me this weekend. Her kid function ratio was (GFR) was below 13 for the last few weeks. SO she got real creepy and was yelling at me to not let her die last night. She was barely able to get out of bed today so i finally took her to the hospital, and her kidney functions came back up from the test she just had 4 days ago. I as worried about her dying but it just wont happen now. So everyone, please take care of your kidneys. Tim
