Is it me or do these gas spout things suck

A few weeks ago I was out and I got a few minutes from our base camp and I started smelling gas. I pulled over and though it might have been my RotoPax leaking gas, but no. I checked under the hood and everything was good then when I looked in the rear I saw gas leaking out around the tank. I handed my son the fire extinguisher and said we need to get back to camp ASAP thinking we may be pulling the tank. By the time we got back to camp we had leaked out almost a full tank of gas. When I was able to get under the jeep and check things out it turned out to be the plastic clip that connects the rubber tubing from the tank to the metal fuel line had come undone. So after cleaning things up I was able to get it back together and we were good to go.

Now for what sucked. I was just about out of gas so I grabbed my Rotopax gas can and fought trying to get gas out of this F'ing things ( Pic 1 & 2) . After getting more gas on the ground than in the jeep my son said "Let me grab my gas can from my truck that I brought for my the generator" So he grabbed it but the spout was to short. Then my buddy said he had a gas can which we were able to get 5 gallons into my jeep ( Pic 3). I then took off the spouts form my Rotopax and poured gas back into his can to fill him back up. When I got home went on Amazon and found these Yellow plastic replacements. I am not sure why we our government has come up with the idea that we are to stupid to use an old fashion gas can WTF.

I am with you, pure garbage. At least the ones I have had experience with, maybe I need two some research, there have to be some really nice ones out there.

Yes, those things are annoying as shit. I have them on the plastic jugs I use to store the gas for my lawnmower and other power yard tools. Every single time I go to fill up the lawnmower (or anything else) I seem to get gas everywhere. It's a horrible, stupid design IMHO.

Why is it they even switched to this design in the first place? Once upon a time you could buy a normal gas can with a long, unrestricted, normal spout.

I purchased some of the yellow "water" spouts at the same time I purchased my Rotopax 2 gal. fuel containers and threw away the CARB spouts. When I replaced the Rotopax containers with a 20 liter NATO can I gutted the included CARB spout so it would flow freely, but have only used the spout when refueling others. For refueling the jeep I leave the can in place and use a Safety Siphon. I've had the same one since the mid-1980's. With its transfer rate of 3.5 gal./minute I can empty a jerry can in less than two minutes.

Yeah all that gas can bullshit started here in CA then poured over into the rest of the country. (that's why CA needs the support of the country more than the "just leave" comments we get most often. We have to fight from within the borders) You have to use water spouts on the rotopax to get away from it. Also, the best fuel jugs you can buy are the often square shaped 5 gallon jugs from places like Summit or Jegs. They are the best and you can add an extra long hose if you like to make filling different things easier.

You can thank California for that piece of shit. They don't allow vapors to escape while fueling and this is what you get. There are many, many work a round's with after market spouts.

I've been using it for a good while and it's pretty great. The CARB compliant spouts are pretty useless.

For the price, I think that should be one of those necessity things that one carries in their off-road "tool kit".

I didn't even know about this until you guys posted it, but it seems very handy to have. Not just for the Jeep either, I'm sure I could use this around the house for lawnmowers and other power equipment.

The vapor will just escape into the atmosphere. So now I am thinking is this just so if I knock over the can the gas will not spill out. I guess if this the case then maybe but they should have tested it with normal people and not in a laboratory. I spill a shit more with the spouts then I ever did knocking over my can

I have the Wavian spout for NATO cans just so I can be CARB legal. They are absurdly expensive for a spout and I totally expected them to suck but I haven't spilled one drop with those things. Better than a gas station pump, no joke. Just put it in place and let the can come down to open the valve and all the fuel goes in the tank. You do have to be able to manage a full gas can.

I paid about $45 for two about three years ago from Barre Army Navy, and that's just the spout. My cans only cost $20 each shipped.

I haven’t check out the Wavian type yet. I have non carb spouts also, it takes a steady hand and practice to not spill those for sure. But every G.D. time I use the CARB ones they spill no matter what

Is that a concern out there? What would happen to in individual if their can spouts were not "CARB legal"? Do you all have roving inspectors on the gov't payroll randomly inspecting gas can spouts?

I don't think it's an issue at all. For some insane reason I got them and they work nice.

And ya, unfortunately at some OHV parks people have been fined for non-CARB gas cans. I don't know how real the risk is, what can you believe these days?
