Well, all done! Biggest job for me so far.
Pleased to say that with lots of Kroil during the weeks leading up, all hardware came off fine, and I was able to clean and re-use it. Skid turned out not to have too much rust, and is now covered in Fluid Film, inside and out. Did a lot of rust checking, cleaning, and Fluid-Filming in the frame and tub where I wouldn't be able to reach with the tank in place.
Along the way, I learned that 97s, 98s, and maybe a few other years, do not have the "plunger" that needs repairing in
this fix. Instead, I have a simpler ping-pong-ball type check valve, as in the pics below. Also I discovered (and then remembered) that my fuel pump assembly had in fact been replaced a few years before, when the Jeep was in my brother's care while I was overseas. So there was a Delphi in there already, as it turns out.
Also, if you'd like a laugh, please picture me trying to put the tank and skid back in place without any assistance. With the rear end up on service ramps, I had only one bottle-jack and two small stands (far too short) with which to balance the whole assembly. Imagine me crawling back and forth, from the behind to underneath, trying to ensure that all 7 carriage bolts were lining up properly, without accidentally pushing any of them up into inaccessibility. Meanwhile, of course, the filler tube was fighting me every inch of the way, refusing to allow the skid holes to align with the bolts. Add to that the fact that everything is covered in Fluid Film, so it's a messy job. It was comical, but I'm glad to say that everything went back on perfectly.
