Thought I'd share my first very rough proof of concept for a RAM mount.
I've wanted a cell phone mount for a while, but I hate hate hate the idea of cutting or drilling into nearly flawless interior.

The two screws that hold the center bezel on the top are secure enough for some light usage it seems. Vibration is minimal, but not zero. Resting the phone on the bezel reduces it even more. Not a problem in my first drive up my 1/4 mile washboard driveway.

It's just a thin metal plate scrap I had lying around. You could go a tiny bit thicker I think and still have the defroster vent cover snap back in place.

Anyways. I spend far too long searching through photos of mounts and didn't find anything I liked that wasn't cutting or drilling or permentantly gluing something to the interior.

I'll route a power cable later.

Anyways, thought I'd share.

Very rough version. I'll make a new one after I drive around for a while with this one and see it if needs any changes.

Vent cover fits, no cutting.

Cool. The one I use is secured under the left end of the passenger oh shit handle. Definitely better than when I had it up on the dash tray.
What app are you running?

ODBLink LX Bluetooth dongle and their own software that comes with it. The dongle is compatible with Torque app and some others I think too.
GPS speedo and actual coolant temps is nice. Estimated MPGs and tons of other stuff too. Fully customizable dashboards. Kinda fun to play with.

I just use their windshield suction cup.

I've never met a suction cup that doesn't fall off more than I like. I have to use the defrost vents about 9 months of the year in the morning here (Oregon Coast permadampness...), so a real bracket is less trouble for me.

With mine, with the mount arm up in the air, it vibrates about the same as my rear view mirror. I lowered the arm a bit so the phone rests on the dash and it doesn't vibrate at all.

Cool. I have Torque Pro. But never have been able to get coolant temp to work on the Jeep. If I Google it, all I get is a bunch of comments about it not working. But coolant temp works fine on my Chevy truck.

These dashboard/window mount suction cups will stick anywhere. . . .

I already have an Arkon suction cup mount for my Garmin navigation unit, similar to the one's linked. It has been rock solid and stayed in place on the dashboard of my Xterra for an entire 3-week overlanding trip in Mexico. It has been 3 1/2 months since installed and it is still holding suction.

Unfortunately, a suction cup mount will not work were I want to locate the mount for my Garmin navigation unit in my LJ. @707kevin's idea will work perfectly.

The key to the Arkon mounts is the tablet mount comes with the "sticky" suction cup. But the phone mount you have to order it separately. It will suction to literally any dash surface or window. I've used it on numerous rental cars. With success every time. They also sell any mount adapter that you can imagine. Screw type, suction, clamp etc. etc..

^^ @WDE That is ingenious. I'm going to keep that in the back of my mind as I experiment with @707kevin's concept.

To @moab : I appreciate the tip about the Arkon sticky suction cup. However, as much as I like the Arkon products I already own the company doesn't offer a suction cup mount that will work for this particular project.

Hopefully I can collect the rest of the parts I need for my project even though most of the world is shut down due to the pandemic. If so, I'll post some photos when a get a bracket mocked up.

I agree. 707kevin should sell those. Great idea. Great design.
