How is it that my 2005 TJ Sahara has a 32RH transmission?

I have a TJ Sahara with 32rh Transmission, Cruise control and Trac-Loc
How could this be as I thought they stopped putting the 32rh 3 speed trannys in around 2002.
It all looks like it was factory original equipment.
How common is this model variation.

Are you positive it's a 2005 and/or 32RH? Unless a previous owner has done a trans swap then either of those two details is incorrect.

So why do you think it would have been swapped out for a 3 speed?

The original transmission might have shit the bed and the cheapest available transmission to the owner at the time was a used 32rh.

Would there be any real advantage changing it back to 4 speed?

Someone must have swapped it in, which would have been a lot of work.

The 32RH is considered by most to be superior to the 42RLE that succeeded it.

I would think if they swapped in the 32rh they would need the wiring harness and ecu to go with it. The newer ecu would be looking for the shift solenoids of the 42rle, and I'm not quite sure the engine control would be the same either (primarily depending on ignition system and o2 sensors). Are we positive it's a 3 speed (counting how many times it shifts perhaps)? Can you post a few pics of the transmission, as they look very different. I hope you have the 32rh, but I can't see them making a 3 speed model just for export.

Hi GasnBrass I've only had it a few days but I'm fairly sure it only shifts up two gears from start and the selector only has 1 2 D. I will crawl under there tomorrow and take a pic. Which angle do you want the pic from?

Do you have a switch that says "O/D OFF"?

A broad pic of each side would work, especially where the shift linkage and trans cooler lines go in on the left side. It's entirely possible someone swapped in a 32rh, but it would require a different ecu, wire harness, transmission mount/skidplate, cooler lines, possibly flexplate and kickdown cable.
