Hmmm, this is interesting. I think that you'd have to have a hardtop in order to mount the ski rack to. Alternatively if you have a soft top you could probably purchase a Safari rack and then mount a ski rack to that. Not sure if it would work, but I am sure it's possible.
Actually, with a safari rack you could probably just get some tie downs and tie the skis down to it in a safe way, therefore eliminating the need for a ski specific rack altogether.
That was my next thought. Maybe carry them vertical / upright. I could see that being a good solution.
What did you figure out? I would like to figure out something for the OR-Fab tire carrier below and hope your end result would give me an idea.
I've seen that one, but I would have to extend it beyond the tire and the aftermarket tire carrier. I would have to get an 18-in extension. I don't know how that would affect the stability.
That one's not bad, but it's only half the cost. You would still have to purchase the one for a bike that goes into the hitch. Also I've heard reports that it's not stable when driving.
These are a little more like what I'm looking for. I don't think I'll get these, but they give me an idea. The other problem with these is that I live in Southern California. I don't think as a white male I want a drive around with the word gringo on the back of my Jeep. I think it's obvious enough.
Two and a snowboard. I usually bring a favorite pair of skis and a powder combo ski to cover any weather in a trip. And then an occasional extra pair of skis or two or a snowboard for a friend. However, the carriers that say four usually only hold two or three and the ones that say six only carry four, five if two of the skis are children.
That’s a lot for a DIY project, but 40 yrs ago I had made a simple clamp that pulled two pair of skis tight up against the spare tire. I used a piece of 1/2” stainless all thread and a large wing nut. It clamped a nested pair of skis on each side between the bindings. The all thread went through the center of the spare the clamp was made from a large piece of aluminum plate 6” x 18” that was formed into a “C” so it had 2 - 4” x 6” returns to capture the skis. a piece of aluminum tube 6” long x 4” square tube in the center to divide the pair and the all thread running through it and the plate. It was also lined with rubber pads so it didn’t damage the skis. Everything was sourced from job site scrap so cost was zip.
Whenever I think of complicated ski racks, I then think about the racks on the sides of shuttle buses in ski areas...it's a box with a rectangle hole cut in the top for each set of skis. This would be very easy to duplicate out of some good plywood, then figure out a way to mount it to something on the back of the jeep.
Whenever I drive with winter slop on the roads, the back of my vehicle get covered with salty crud. You may want to put your ski equipment in some type of a bag.
