We get contacted about once a week with some version of this-

I am in the market for new brakes because the stock ones are not cutting it anymore on my JKU. Spring is coming soon and that also means I will be in Moab often, especially Jeep safari, and I am wanting to get a new brake setup before. I have heard nothing but good about your brakes, but do not have the money for them. If we could work out a deal I would love to run your products over other companies.

They get a version of this as my reply- (cut and paste from the email back to him)

No problem at all Sir. We have a program we've developed just for folks in your situation. Purchase the brake kit at full price and run it. Every time that someone you have convinced to purchase our product lets us know that you were the reason they went with us over the competition, we will send you 50 dollars via legal method of your choice, PayPal, check, etc. That gives you the opportunity to not only get a discounted kit, if you are convincing enough, you could get to the point where you actually turn a profit.

Let me know when you're ready to go on this, I'm looking forward to doing business with you.

Respectfully,
blaine

Haha, you and I have a similar sense of humor.

People do the same thing with me and my services (since I'm a web designer).

I get guys who email me on my website and ask me if I'm willing to build them a website for free in exchange for a profit share of their soon to be billion dollar business. I laugh and tell them that I'm not willing to take a gamble on their business, and that I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but their chances of becoming a billion (or even million) dollar business are slim to none.

Then I'll get other people asking me if I do payment plans (to which I always respond no, I am not a bank, if you want to do payment plans, pay me with a credit card and then you can pay your credit card company back in payments).

So this post makes me laugh, because I can relate in some way or another.

We get 3 SEO contacts per day. Same spiel, all the same price. The ones that don't shoot the 1500 per month price right off the bat, get my standard reply. "Let me guess, 1500 per month, right??"

I'm assuming a lot of them are from India? :p

Surprisingly not or they have done a really good job at picking American sounding names.

I have a cut and paste reply for them that explains in order to generate an additional 1500 a month in profit just to break even on their services, sales would have to exponentially increase and the only way I'd be able to keep up is if they come and help me pack and ship. I never get a reply back. Where do they think folks get an extra 1500 a month from?

I made several of them an offer that if they wanted to get after it, I'd be more than glad to send them a commission on every sale that was attributed to their efforts, but again, no replies.

They're all automated emails, sent from India, with people who have chosen American sounding names.

One of the things I do for a living is SEO, AdWords and PPC. Yet I get assholes sending me those SAME emails all the time telling me they can improve my SEO and yadda, yadda. I always have a cut and paste response that I send back where I ask them why they are trying to sell SEO services to someone who does SEO for a living.

Of course they never reply, but it's funny nonetheless.

And you're right. In order you to generate an additional $1500 a month to pay them, you'd have to really ramp up business.

Most of those companies (and I know first hand) do really, really crappy SEO work.

The best part is, first, they are running a JKU. Then, they have modded it to the point they are wheeling it around Moab, probably with a not-so-inexpensive suspension lift, bigger tires, etc. All this and they 'do not have the money for them'?

Hard to believe you're not giving these away for all that great free advertising...

Ha, no kidding.

Even used JKUs don't get much cheaper than 30k for a nice one. Then you've got all the JK parts which are twice as expensive as TJ parts... Yet they're asking for discounts on brakes. How funny is that?

Just about exactly my thoughts. You have enough money to buy a JKU, You have enough to mod the crap out of it to the point you overwhelmed the stock brakes, and YOU are taking several trips to Moab in the spring. Look bitch, I've been wheeling before, at least once, so I know how much it costs to go do that shit so skip one of them and buy some brakes before you run into something and hurt yourself.

How funny is that?

Not much funny at all from where I'm sitting. I never realized just how much not fun a lot of folks are until we started selling stuff. Holy crap are there are lot of scam artists, and lack of integrity out there.

You sent me damaged pads, one of them is chipped, I need a new set. No, send me a picture of the damaged one and we'll send out a single replacement. Never mind. (we pack them in such a manner it is almost impossible for them to get damaged.)

I have a damaged rotor, I need a new pair Next Day Aired to me. Send me a picture of the damage. Pic shows up and there is a casting defect in the face about the size of BB and half the depth. I tell him to run it and if there is anything it does to let him know it is defective, I'll send out two free ones. Never heard back from him.

Your backing plate broke. Let me guess, the anchor pin at the top busted off and you wadded up the brake shoes and hardware? Yes, how did you know? Because that's what happens when you drive off with the parking brake applied, I've done it, had some friends do it, and seen it done on the trail.

No, I was just going down the highway and it popped and locked up a tire. Uh, no, that's not how they work. I'm not a mechanic so I don't care to know how they work. Yes, I understand but if you will listen for a moment and try to understand how they work, then you will understand why what you are trying to tell me happened, can't really happen.
I'm going to leave you an appropriate review. Okay, the only thing you can appropriately say is you broke a part doing something you should not have and you are trying to get a free one to fix your mistake which by the way, is not my product, it is a product I buy and resell. Help me out here and put me in touch with your mechanic so I can get some pics. If there is anyway we can make this the fault of the backing plate, I'll get you a new one sent out. (He sends me a picture of the whole axle.)

We also get the "you shipped us damaged parts about once a week". I ask for pictures of the box, box is pristine. 99% of the time as soon as they send the pic, it dawns on them that they just ratted themselves out and I never hear back from them or they don't send the pic and I never hear back.

AND then, we have the poor guy who we have messed over and it keeps happening to him over and over. Nice guy orders a hydro assist. We ship it and forget the cylinder. He lets me know, I ship the cylinder. It gets there and we forgot the misalignment bushings. We ship those. Took 3 tries to get it right and he's very nice about our screw-ups fortunately.

Just got this one and reading it pretty much proves your point. Look at the email address connected to the American sounding name, and then look at how he signs it. No one with the name Brian, spells it wrong on two different emails. That and why would we need to Skype with anyone in the US?

Hey Lily,

Would you be available for a call/chat?

Let me know if you have any question or have any requirement you would like to discuss.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Best!
Brain

Yep, that's how these companies work. I get these emails about 3-4 times a week (since I run my own business as well).

They're for the most part, the same as the ones you get. They'll have a name like "Greg" in the email header, but when you look at the email address it's something completely different.

Then they want to Skype with you, and this is because an actual phone call from India to California would be insanely expensive as I'm sure you're aware. Skype on the other hand is free. I'm sure if you were to Skype with them you'd see "Brian" is actually an East Indian with average English skills at best.

These guys do this all day long. They search for email addresses of people who own businesses like you or me. They put you on a mailing list and then send us the same stupid emails all the time.

Even if someone were to go through with their "SEO plan", I guarantee you'd want to shoot yourself in the foot after a week of dealing with them. For one, the language barrier is the big one, but on top of that, I've seen the quality of work these guys put out first hand, and it's mediocre at best.

Life is a fine line between taking deep breaths to calm down and taking deep breaths because you are choking someone out.

Amen... Sometimes I end up taking multiple of those breathers each day.

Blaine, do you own a shop or a parts store? All that on top of being a designer for savvy? Or do you own that too?? So much mysteriousness behind the mrblaine name.
