It could boil down to just simple economics. NPT plug, a little blue or red sealer, run it in and be done with it.
No special low profile bolt or copper washer.
And bean counters too.

I think that's what I will have to do to be honest.

Get a galvanized pipe plug and stick a magnet to it before you screw it in...

Yes they do, but it needs to be more securely attached to the plug so it has no chance of dislodging from the plug and ending up in the (also steel) gears.
