Do you have an OEM jeep key around? if it is gray then it is chipped. But a quick google of that ilco key indicates it is not chipped.

My 03’ isn’t chipped, not sure when they started to do it but my friends 05’ is

My 05 is not chipped. It was an option. Before I was on this forum I knew some were chipped and some not. I did not know how to figure it out then (black vs grey key). I simply went to Home Depot and got a $2.50 copy made of my key. It works so my original key is not chipped.

Ive got an 04 Chevy Duramax. The wife came in one day and said something is wrong with the truck. It won't stay running, I go out to check it out. She had my JEEP key in the ignition. It fit, turned and started. just wouldn't stay running due to the chip. LOL

yeah it won't stay running.

The gray oval key with the chip is the SKIM key. It started in 98 as an option. All TJ PCM's have the SKIM function built into them. After that it takes a module and programming of it to the PCM and the keys to enable it.

The SKIM is plugged into a harness connector near the steering column and mounted under the upper cover of the steering column near the MFS. The grey keys need to be programmed at the dealer UNLESS you have a friend that has the factory access controller.

My local hardware store copies those keys for $40. The newer type that my '08 GC has they can't do, it doesn't even have a key at all, just a fob.

Most vehicles have an emergency key in the fob. You just press a small release and you can slide the key out.
My wife's 2014 has one and several other people I know have the emergency key built into the fob.

Nothing says "Jeep" like a key that has to have a module and be programmed by a dealer for it to work.

I sure am glad my 1998 model has a simple $10 key.
