Gearing question

Why does my buddy's 97 Auto Sahara with verified 3:55 gears and 33" tires feel as strong as my 03 Rubi 5 speed with 4:56 and my 06 Rubi Automatic with 4:88. His tires are mildy aggressive A/Ts.

As big a fan if regearing as I am, I can't convince him in good conscious to regear this vehicle.

He actually put bigger tires on it to keep it from running such high RPMs... And it feels just right on the highway. Turns +-2500 at 65 mph.

To add, I bought a 99? With 35” tires and come to find out, 3.07 gears. Hey it was my first TJ, I didn’t know. It drove. No great but it did.

That is exactly what I think... It pulls the tires so well.. it doesn't struggle. That particular transmission feels perfect for a Jeep.

The liberty Poor choice by Jeep to use it in 2003 and up TJs, nothing wrong with OD and more gears, but not 0.69

Damn. My friend got a free liberty and with a small lift and good tires it’s not horrible for snow runs!

It seems if someone regeared this particular Jeep it would just scream anywhere over 60. ... With these 33 inch tires.

Just based on our collective knowledge what do we see guys doing with this particular transmission and 33 inch tires?

I’ve got one, not bad at all when cooled and geared properly, the problem arises from minimal R&D leading to the use of stupid low gearing in order to correct the OD - that’s why most are shocked to hear the 5.38 recommendation for 35s and highway use.

So I figured I must be geared to high with 3:55 but I got bigger tires in order to offset redlining at highway speed. Didn’t know the tranny had a lot to do with it

Yeah that’s the reason. The “what gears should I run” chart shows the crazy differences between each trans and the needed gears.

The most you’re looking at is 4.10 - but that is the lowest you’d want to go.
