I'm also reading that a lot of people with this symptom attribute it to lifters sticking/hitting the valve cover...I'm wondering if that's what it is.

I used to drive a Chevy van with a 350 automatic that would do the same thing when turning the engine off! CLUNK CLUNK CKUNK!!! I tried different things to see if they would change the noise somehow and one thing that eliminated the noise was shutting the engine off while the transmission was still engaged. That led me to believe that the problem was transmission related so as I started to tear the bell housing pan off I noticed that the nuts holding the torque converter to the flex plate were so loose that the holes in the flex plate were egg-shaped. the studs on the TC were almost worn halfway through so out came the transmission and in went a new flex plate and TC....no more problems til I sold the van years later! Hope this helps!!
It ended up being engine-related. I think it was because I sea-foamed the engine halfway through my oil cycle, so it was making something in the engine stick. Once I changed the oil with a high-mileage synthetic oil the symptoms disappeared.
Awesome... glad it was simple and inexpensive!! I only use SEA FOAM in the fuel system because I am pretty strict with my oil change appointments. Good luck with the Jeep. I'm really enjoying mine.
