Well here I go again. I'm on my third Jeep since 2000. I should've never sold my '05 Rubicon LJ.

HOWEVER, a few years ago I literally flew to Toledo, Ohio to buy my Holy Jeep Grail (2005 Rubicon Sahara Unlimited). You know, the one from that horrible Matthew McConaughey movie Sahara. They only made 1,000 of this 'commemorative' model (there really wasn't anything special or different about it).

Well evidently, I was high on crack... or maybe it was that it'd be a cool story that I flew to Toledo, the birthplace of Jeeps... or maybe the limited edition... either way you look at it, I got an amazing deal on a clean CarFax, 1 owner, low mileage (55k) Piece of Crap.

This thing was used and abused I tell you. I mean.. clearly the previous owner used it like a Jeep should be used. I was punch-drunk.. I literally thought that I was going to road trip this thing back to Texas. Luckily, the engine purred like a kitten... I figured what the hell, thats got to be a good sign, right?

Wrong... took it on a test drive, and it shuddered like nobody's business. It was bone stock, so I knew that it couldn't be death wobble or other modified driveline issues. Well, this puppy wasn't going to make it through the 20-hour drive home. So what do I do? Started wheeling and dealing with the sales guy. He was all, "that's just how Jeeps handle". I told him to jump off a cliff and then successfully talked the sales manager down by about $3k (it was gonna take that much to get her going in the right direction). Luckily, I also talked them into shipping it to Texas for free.

Long story short... this thing is my nemesis. I'm barely even proud of it. I keep it in the garage so neighbors don't have to look at it.

I'm starting this build thread well after I've worked on it for the past few years. I literally didn't take any pictures along the way. However, I'm going to chronicle all of my prior trials and tribulations of this money pit of a pipe dream.

It will be funny, it will be entertaining. You will literally cringe in retrospect all of the ups and downs and pitfalls that I went through just to get her roadworthy (much less trailworthy).

I've named her Lucille, in memory of two amazing 70's country songs.

Kenny Rogers -
In a barroom in Toledo across from the depot
On a barstool she took off her ring
I thought I'd get closer so I walked on over
I sat down and asked her, her name.

I've had some sad times, lived through some bad times
But this time your hurtin' won't heal.
You picked a fine time to leave me Lucille.

Waylon Jennings -
Lucille, you won't do your daddy's will
Oh, Lucille, you just won't do your daddy's will
Well, there ain't nothing to you, but I love you still

So... got the Jeep back to Texas the herky-jerky front end turned out to be the front differential needed rebuilding. I mean, Jesus. What makes a front diff needing to be rebuilt in under 55k miles?

Unfortunately, when comes to rebuilding a differential, I'm not even going to act like I know what I'm doing. So I took it to a Jeep shop and had them knock that out along with replacing all of the U-joints. Turn out one of the factory Rubicon lockers needed a fix too, I'm not sure what was broke, but they fixed it for me.

That set me back a few thousand, but at least she'll be up and running right?

Build plan at this point =

New Radiator
New Air Conditioner Condenser
New Oil Pan & Rear Main Seal
Chase Down a Cylinder 2 Misfire Code
A/C Blower Motor Relay
New Battery
New Windshield Wiper Linkage
Replace Right Front Brake Caliper (the piston is frozen clamped)
Exogate Spare Tire Carrier (tailgate is sagging fierce)

Thats a lot for only 55,000 miles. Im looking forward to seeing it take shape. I havn't had as much work to do on mine, but thats how any old vehicle seems to work. When you get it its tons of time into maintenance before you can move onto the fun stuff. Is it at least rust free?

Welcome. I've got family in Austin and friends in Gerogetown. I don't envy your journey unless you have the money to do it right.

Yeah, she's got great bones for being 15 years old (relatively speaking at least, you know how TJs are with rust).

My goal is to keep Lucille road-friendly. Let's face it, I live in Texas. This is mostly a ranch / hunt rig (I do a ton of hunting and camping). Might even get it one of those retarded 'kevlar' coated type paint jobs (I don't mind the pinstripes, but the mesquites down here can do some real damage).

2.5" OME Springs & Shocks
Adjustable Front & Rear Track Bars
Antirock Front (maybe rear too)
Tummy Tuck

There’s is a link floating around that can help you obtain a replacement.

Edit: I obtained the info. PM coming your way.
Well yes and no. The old instructions were "If you are trying to locate your number, call Trish at Imperial Marketing - (248) 353-0950 and provide her your vin#." Trish retired.. :( and rumor has it so has the chance to get your replacement dash sticker. Its worth a try, and if it works report back.

Oh and Hi from Rubihara #380! Named mine Eleanor, and she was a b*tch to get right at first as well. Woulda considered Christine, but that car fixed itself when something broke. Same as you, 51k on the odometer and 2nd owner, but had a bunch of issues. Fought me every step of the way for the first few years of ownership but damn I love her.

Also, if you do the Facebook there is a ground "2005 Rubihara Owners Group" only open to Rubihara owners but a good source for info for our Jeeps and cool to see mods others have done on the exact same looking rig. Also "LJ Nation" is cool.

I assume you have heard the Piano Bar version of the chorus...

You picked a fine time to leave me Lucille.
You bitch, you slut, you whore. You suck, you swallow, and come back for more.
