Anyone have a Flowmaster 40 series exhaust?

Does anyone have a Flowmaster 40 series exhaust? I got under my jeep last week to change the Cat's and noticed that the Muffler is on its way out. I want to swap it out with something louder. I can find tons of videos of people putting their mic right next to the exhaust pipe and revving the beans off of it, sounds pretty good for a 4.0.

My main question is daily driveability, can someone speak to/point me in the direction of videos with just normal driving from inside the jeep, what does it sound like when you drive normally, what about when you drive aggressively? Highway drone (enough to be stupid loud over all the other sounds a jeep makes at 80 MPH) ? is the idle so loud you can't think at stoplights? I have a VW with straight throughs (sounds about like 2 Harley's revving in tandem) and while I love that, it's a wee bit louder than I might want the daily.

Thanks for the experience, I was also looking at the Flowmaster FX cat-back and maybe something from Magnaflow, considering a 3rd Cat delete. love to know what yall think of that.

I have a super 40 on my 3" exhaust with a cammed stroker. It's loud. Too loud, even for most Jeep people. I also have an Apexi ECV (Google it) to quiet it down when I come home so the neighbors won't hate me, but you can't really drive around like that. I plan to get a quieter muffler sometime soon'ish when I do my tummy tuck and need exhaust work anyways.

I would appreciate it, I imagine a stroker is gonna be a little louder, but not much.

It's not the stroker per se, but the big cam certainly makes it sound different. The 3" pipe affects volume more than anything I think.



If you have anything with straight pipes, you are probably more along my lines of thinking when it comes to exhaust volume. Just speaking for me and not all my pissed of neighbors, it's not too loud around town or on the highway with the top down for short jogs, although it certainly gets attention. I would think twice about long trips on the highway with my family though. As a matter of fact, I have found myself pulling the ECV as close to completely shut as I can without choking the motor while driving down the highway to keep the wife happy. But again, 3" exhaust. I don't think it would be as bad with factory piping.

Appreciate that, I’m guessing with the stock and maybe keeping the 3rd cat it would be ok, that sounds mean though, love the almost lope.

I haven't had an exhaust on my TJ, but I owned 3 XJ 4.0L's previously with different exhausts.

Removing the 3rd cat will definitely make it louder and raspier, I'd keep it or replace it with a high flow, they sound better (deeper) with the cat in place honestly.

Flowmaster 40 series will be loud. I've always liked how they sound, but I couldn't stand them on my Jeeps for more than a month. It sounds cool for a few days, but then everything starts buzzing, people stare at you like you are an inconsiderate asshole, and I always found myself being conscious of the noise I was making at like 3am. Long drives it got annoying after a few hours.

50 series Flowmaster is definitely quieter but with the same tone. Magnaflow is probably the quietest while giving a nice burble. My TJ currently has stock exhaust, but if I were to change it, I likely wouldn't put on anything louder than a 50 series or a Magnaflow.

I had a 40 on my silverado one time and it was way too loud. Totally different engine, I know. It was so damn loud I couldn’t hear my son talking when he was in the back seat going down the highway. He’d have to lean up and stick his head between the seats for me to hear what he was saying.

It only stayed on a few months cause I couldn’t take it any longer.

I have FX style... uff that thing is a bit too much.
Jeep came with it and was bolted to original exhaust, sounded really good as long as speeds kept around 50mph.
On the highway it was a muffled droning, or what ever they call it, not loud but clogs up ears and gives an effect of concussion.

Recently cats went out, so i changed entire thing to flowmaster, and that muffled droning got almost twice as worse, i guess cause of the better air flow, or wtf. Drive on the highway turned into a very unpleasant torture. Morning start up became unpleasant too, clogs up ears.

Chris wrote a while ago that he deleted 3rd cat and kept the muffler. I wonder what that be like.
I like what this FX does up to the certain point, past that point i just want to blow my brains out. So i am in search of similar effect, but with a muzzle on it.

I've had Banks monster, Thrush welded and Flowmaster on several Jeeps. The Thrush gets pretty loud over time, Banks sounds good and my current Flowmaster Delta 40 is deeper than stock, has a nice low groan and zero drone at any speed. The Flowmaster Super 40 and 44 have way too much drone from inside the Jeep.

i Love the delta 40. I’ve put it on both Jeeps I’ve owned, louder than stock without being obnoxious and way deeper. I’ve also tried out the super 40 which was definitely on the louder side of being comfortable. With the new Jeep I stuck to the delta 40.

Had one on my Grand Wagoneer with the AMC 360 in it. WAY too LOUD! I could not have a conversation inside the car or listen to the radio on the interstate.

Thanks for all the advice, sounds like the “original” 40 is to loud and I would be better off with a delta, I’m going to go try and find some videos of that. As for the Apexi ECV, sounds like a brilliant idea. But I’m having a hard time finding one. Seems like there going out of biz.

Yeah, that came off my old Skyline. I bought it in Japan. I doubt you could find one now. Honestly it's not really a great option but I already had it so why not.

Interesting. I was thinking of moving to a 50 series but sounds like the delta 40 is a lot quieter than the super 40?

This is just what I wanted to hear it but not loudly.

Wow, That is definitely louder than the 44.

Video? aAn interior around clip would be particularly appreciated. I found a clip of an XJ with the 4.0 and an org. 40 series and it seemed not to loud. but it was like 10 years old so the sound quality was junk.

Youtube videos won't do the volume justice. If volume is of any concern I would get a 50 Series Delta flow. Same sound, quieter on the inside.

Judging by their chart, there is a huge gap between Delta 40 and 50, so recommending 50 over 40 is like going with too quiet over too loud.

Do you mean adding something additional after the 40? Isn't 40 is "some sort of muffler" ?
