Can you engage 4 LO from a standstill?

I have an 05 with a 4” lift and 33’s (that are pretty worn now actually). And I do 75-80 or a little over on the highway toll road here any time I’m on it. It drove like absolute crap, and I followed threads here to fix everything. I can do that speed and hold steady with 1 finger (I don’t drive that way, but I can)

I’d work on fixing it and getting everything right
That's my story pretty much. I act like I'm some kind of expert on here at times, I'm not. The truth is I just want people to experience one that drives great if they haven't.

Jeeps always have gone to crap fast if things get loose and sloppy, but the TJ was designed to give the driver a nice on and off road experience. Sadly, they are all 14+ years old, and so many have been molested to the point many people have never driven one that is close to right. It's nice.

I like to say they aren't hard to get right....just real easy to mess up.

Your goal is to be careening into hostile terrain, the girl in the passenger seat grabs the dash handle and yells "oh no!" as you raise one eyebrow, yank up the shifter and romp on the gas and get it done.

There's something women love about a TJ man.

I had no idea that moving slowly while shifting in to low range (even in reverse) was a thang! Until I started following this forum. I ground a few pounds of gears until I read that. I have ground some gears on several Jeep’s and the TJ might be different.
You can force it into low range while stopped but you will grind a lot of metal. I can’t tell you that it will break it because I have done that for ten years.
Going into 4hi, happens whenever I feel like it makes sense. No problemo!

I'm with @jjvw on shifting out of 4wd at speed... unnoticeable.
....

I had a mildly interesting moment yesterday morning while driving to work in the snow. The main road was clear enough for 2H. I start to turn onto a side street where I anticipated 4H might be a good idea. I coast and start to shift the t-case mid turn while braking a bit. A wheel or two locks up on the ice. And for the first time that I recall, I grind gears going into 4H.

I wondered what would happen if you were turning or something was going on and upshifting.

As built as yours is it is awesome that you can drive it all around.

Here in the South when we see someone attempt to build one to that extent it's not even fit for the highway anymore... That's sad but it really does happen.

I'll blame the loss of synchcronized drive shaft rotations while rolling.

The rest is through careful parts selection and fitting. Anyone can do it and it doesn't need to be expensive.

Well said. Does a mid-arm present the same concerns with hanging up on rocks the guys show that a long arm does... Or are the mounting points changing things enough to take that out of the equation.

With 33s on harder stuff, I was catching the lower frame mounts all time to the point where it was really irritating. With 35s, significantly less. Same with the diffs, coincidentally.

Fixed that for accuracy.

Is that so the cameras can't get a clear picture when you blow through the toll without paying?

p.s. I did that once and they mailed me a huge fine.😟
Ha, no, The speed limit is 75 on the tollways here, some are 80!

I known people that try to “change lanes” at the exact time to try and MIS read from the scanner. I just pay the stupid tolls.

I recall the manual saying you can shift from 2H into 4H and back up to 55mph. I've done it at 80. The gearing is the same, so everything should line up at any speed. Not that you should...

2003 Rubicon

LIAR! 80! LMAO!
