What are you using for a transmission and transfer case with your LS swap?

I was wondering what everyone is using for a transmission and a transfer case after doing a LS swap? I have a 2005 TJ with 6-speed manual(NSG370) stock and a stock transfer case(NV245). My intentions are for rock crawling NOT my daily driver. It will be trailered. I prefer a manual trany over an automatic but that doesnt mean its out of the question. I am open to any suggestions... Thanks
When I chose an LS for my YJ build, I also pulled the trigger on a built 4L80E which is built for rock crawling by Maximum Transmission out of California.

A very popular transmission builder for a lot of KoH competitors and rock crawlers.

Have you considered an AW4 swap? Swapping the NV3550 for a 42RLE is a nightmare wiring wise as it is, might not be all that much more difficult to put in a good ol' Cherokee AW4. Probably need new driveshafts, though. That 42RLE overdrive is 🤮
After hearing what @mrblaine has to say about the AW4 swaps he’s done in TJs, you couldn’t pay me to install one 😉

An AW4 would be significantly harder to wire in than a 42RLE that would just plug in. Plus getting its lockup torque converter to work automatically is difficult at best, if at all. Not to mention the AW4 is longer and it runs hotter too.

While the AW4 enjoyed a few years as a common conversion it died out for the above reasons.
Not dead enough. We still have folks installing them. The last one we did was the typical bullshit. He collected all the parts, he did all the research, then I spelled out the issues he was going to face in several emails, on the phone, and in person. It is going to run hot, don't run it without a gauge. It is going to throw a flashing check engine light any time you exceed 38-3900 rpm due to the CPS relocator. You really need to regear and it may not be enough to stop from feeling like you are dragging an anchor due to the power that piece of shit robs. All of it fell on deaf ears and he fully ignored all of it due to "his" research being contrary to my experience.

About a month after he picked it up, I get a phone call. Hey, why does this thing act like it has no power, why didn't you tell me it was going to run so hot, and why didn't you tell me about the flashing check engine light. That is very annoying.

I did tell you, in person, on the phone, and in email.

No, we never discussed any of that.

Hold on a second and then check your emails.

I dug back through the emails, found the one where I listed the problems he was going to encounter, highlighted them, and forwarded the email to him.

Okay, I remember that, but my research said that wasn't true so I ignored it.

Okay, how about now?

How do we fix it?

You need to regear, install a big ass trans cooler, and then we can explore options to move the CPS back to the bell housing.

Screw it, I'll just LS swap it and he did.

My helper also installed one. He is running 38's with 5.38 gearing and a nice running 4.0. He says that while having an OD is nice, having a top speed of 67 mph is not.

I have one installed, very nicely done. The nicest thing I can say about is if you want to know what it is like to own and drive a 4 banger without the stigma, install an AW-4.

Any chance you can send me the list in a message? I have a buddy who wants to go down this path and I'd like to steer him away. Especially, knowing he likes a Jeep that doesn't drive like a dog!

Good to know. I had always assumed the AW4 was a great transmission. Clearly it isn't!
Nope, I had a number of XJs with the AW4 and remember frequently complaining about the transmission when I owned them.

I have a good friend who is Mr. XJ. He works with me. He helped do the last swap and he had driven mine. I told him what the outcome was gonna be and he gave me that look that says "yeah, I hear the words coming out of your mouth, but I don't believe you". So, I waited until we were done and had him drive it. He got back and I had him go drive the other one again. When he got back from that test drive, he gets out and gives me the bit WTF? look. How does that trans go from being pretty good in an XJ to a complete piece of shit in a TJ? I tell him I have no idea and we still talk about just how big the difference is.
