Is the MARS mod illegal?my jeep does cb and legal ham vhf/uhf. looking at the gmrs frequencies, they do not overlap. should we cancel reservations if we don't do gmrs?

To add to what @Chris said, some of us are so deep into our builds we haven't had time to get our HAM license. It's always been my intent to get HAM for my TJ but I'm cutting it so close to getting my TJ done that I now might be coming out in my LJ instead. I just don't have the time outside of work and family to focus on getting my HAM license, instead I'm spending every spare moment I have on trying to get my TJ ready instead.I think the problem you will always have with HAM is that the hardcore guys will use it for sure, but most people aren't going to want to be bothered with studying for a test, then having to go somewhere and take the test.
I'm not saying it's difficult or anything, I'm just saying that there is a convenience factor, and if a good GMRS radio can get you even 15 miles of range with obstructions and hills, that is more than the average Jeep owner would ever need.
For the HAM guys, the MARS mod looks like the solution.
My goal for this year is to get as many people as I can off of CB.
Are those all UHF channels for GMRS?Just so others are aware if your local group runs HAM radios with the "MARS" mod you can type in GMRS channels (FCC does not approve of this). Radio distributors such as Gigaparts will do the mod for you for a small fee.

CBs have been around a long time and a lot of Jeeps in Moab and other places still have them.I don't see a reason to cancel, I'm sure other rigs will be there that have either HAM or CB as well.
Yes. I may have been using the channel 16 frequency on my ham last weekend to talk to the "lazy kid" a few posts up.Are those all UHF channels for GMRS?
I wouldn't consider myself hardcore, but I did take 50 or so practice tests on a ham study app before taking the test.I think the problem you will always have with HAM is that the hardcore guys will use it for sure, but most people aren't going to want to be bothered with studying for a test, then having to go somewhere and take the test.
I won’t get rid of my CB, I’ve never had an issue using it in the trails. Until now. It’s what everyone I know uses. Are those all UHF channels for GMRS?

I wasn't going to be the one to stir the pot, but since you mention it, cb is far from dead in the few spots I have wheeledI won’t get rid of my CB, I’ve never had an issue using it in the trails. Until now. It’s what everyone I know uses.
@Chris need pics of your gmrs setup. Like to see the antenna solution.
Where do you plan to mount the antenna? That’s my dilemma, I don’t need antennas everywhere.Waiting for it to arrive, but I ordered this antenna:

this radio:

this cable:

and an external speaker:

Use code "MOBILE10" for 10% off.

I dumped my hard-mounted unit and bought a handheld. The funny thing is I think I'm getting the same performance out of it.I'm not getting rid of my CB either.
I have the same handheld CB you have, and it has almost the same range as my Cobra. I plan to keep the handheld for those that prefer to stay in the 20th century. We don't want them to be lonely on the trail, lol!I dumped my hard-mounted unit and bought a handheld. The funny thing is I think I'm getting the same performance out of it.
