I did something similar for the JTEC/Magnum swap stuff so I figured it be handy to do something for the Hemi stuff too. It is unfortunate that I lost the Magnum info when a ‘forumthatshallnotbenamed’ had a server photo glitch that wiped out all my images, which then prompted me to ask an admin for help, only to have the same admin accidentally erase the entire thread :cry:

I‘ve done the Gen III swap myself, although I went the stroker route with a forged rotating assembly and a custom built 545. Happy with the result, but expensI’ve and the tuning was a bit of a pain. Fun project though.

Good to see someone else who hates spark plug wires.

Dang I wish I'd seen that thread since IMO the information in this thread is GREAT. And one on the JTEC/Magnum would be nice to have.

If there is a need, I can replicate for a JTEC/Magnum write-up...

I just helped a guy wire his YJ (he sent me both his YJ and Ram harness and I cleaned them up and got them labeled) and I know the circuit ID’s off the top of my head.

Is that person possibly Chris from the Jeep Forum?

I've tried to post up information about the Magnum swap but I don't know all the tricks. Was going to try and do a How To for Chris to have over in the resource area. There is a need as IMO there are still a lot of people doing the magnum swap.

Actually, his name is indeed Chris... not sure if it’s the same person you’re thinking of, but if it was 92 YJ - then it’s likely the same one :)

Here’s me marking and confirming the Ram harness for him. This was a weird mid-year change (early 98 before the 98.5 CCD change which had some of the later changes but not all) and I couldn’t find a 92 FSM for his YJ harness (but did get lucky using my 92-93 RamCharger for some unidentified pins!).

A stroker or maybe even a built Apache swap is very possible in the future. For now, I’m going to start with the 5.7/65RFE, some SRT manifolds, and a good tune and see how happy I am with ~400hp/425tq first.

I may be pinging you for some info if you don’t mind. For starters, what ECM did you use??

I have one of those unicorn rigs also. My TJ is a 01/1996 build date vehicle and found out from another member on here @RangerRick that the wiring in my TJ is different than later model build date TJ's. From what I have been able to find out the 01-03/96 build dates had different wiring.
 
PC1P's TJ Hemi Swap Adventures - Part I

Foreword

This isn't meant to be a "how to" guide (at least not yet), but rather a place where I can centralize thoughts, references, resources and information related to my swap, plus be a place where I can add in real-world issues and solutions. In time, this may transition to a How To, but for now we can just consider it a reference page. I didn't want this information to be cluttered among the pages of my build-thread, so I'm keeping it here for easier searching and reading.


Background
I love V8's. I love Jeeps. So naturally, I love-love V8 Jeeps :) I also love EFI and have been a popular resource for those folks swapping in Magnum 5.2/5.9L engines into just about everything. Truth be told, I have a love-hate relationship with the 4.0L. While I commend it's simplicity, longevity and reliable EFI, for me it's a dated platform with the sexiness and excitement of a Protestant nun. Don't get me wrong - I'd take a 4.0L over a carb'd SBC any day of the week, regardless of the power differences. But, the times they are a changin'...

For me, a modern Gen III or IV V8 in a Jeep built to maintain reliability and low-end torque is a very driver and trail-friendly combination that is hard to beat. For swap candidates, that essentially leaves two options: the GM or Mopar offerings. Why no Ford consideration? Well generally speaking, there are three reasons why no one (not even Ford guys) swap Coyote motors into Jeeps. First, they're wide and hard to package. Second, the transmission options suck. And third, Ford has a nasty habit of changing things every 4 years or so, so who knows how long any particular platform will be around.

The GM options, ubiquitously referred to as the "LS engines" (even though the "LS" moniker is bastardized a bit) are by far the most popular. The LM-series 4.8L and 5.3L engines are cheap, can be found in junkyards everywhere, are reliable and offer good gas mileage, and can make some serious power with nothing more than a $1200 eBay turbo. Transmission options are plentiful as well, since all modern GM offerings will bolt up to any old SBC pattern transmission, including the TH350, TH400, 700R4 and all 4L60/80 options. The swaps are also well documented and you can buy stand-alone or vehicle-specific wiring all over the web.

The Mopar options, aka the "G3 Hemi", were once considered a novelty swap. It wasn't even remotely as well documented as the LS-swaps, there were plenty of unknowns, and like every Mopar in the history of pushrods, they cost 2-3x as much to buy and build. But, time has been kind to the G3's and with used engines coming down in price to be competitive with the GM options, their popularity is quickly climbing. So much so now that even Holley has pledged their full support for the platform (quite the change since they were one of the original card-carrying members of the LS-Club!)

So why did I pick the G3 Hemi? A few reasons really and I will outline some of the advantages and I go through the swap. The biggest reason however is emissions compliance. I live in the Phoenix Metro area and have to abide by all ADEQ requirements, which oddly enough are even more stringent than CARB (Cali) emissions requirements. The G3 Hemi + the correct factory parts are a relatively easy way to ensure full-emissions compliance with a "factory installed look" for the foreseeable future. With something like the LS, there is notably more work and headache, so it wasn't something I'd consider on a dual-use rig.

The engine and trans is out of an ‘06 Ram, but I had to use the ‘05 PCM to be consistent with the rest of the system.

Before the Hemi I ran a supercharged I6 that put out 400 on the torque side (300hp), so I did not want to do all that work for a stockish 5.7 for such a small jump in power. I’m well into the 500’s in HP and torque.

My RamCharger is ~500hp/575tq and it honestly makes me hate driving anything else in the house. Even the wife's 3.6L/8-speed Grand Cherokee feels like an absolute dog when driving it shortly after driving the RC around. I hope I'm happy with the 5.7/65RFE for at least a short while.

How's your 545 holding up? I have seen a handful of reports that it's not great at holding power. People have said this about the 46RE/RH too, but mine is holding up well to the stroker Magnum (after a $2600 rebuild at least lol).

She moves really well as it is, but I'm hoping a good tune and the better engine management of the JTEC will really make this motor shine while keeping it safe.


No problems spinning 37"s :) Truthfully, I can totally see me Hemi-swapping the RC in the future and using the stroker for something else. I've always wanted to do a LRE (Lil' Red Express) build - either a true restoration or replica.

I'm basing my stroker numbers off of two documented builds with near identical build specs (one coming out of the "How to build Big Inch Mopar Small Blocks"), real world numbers from a handful of dyno'ed crate motors, and from talking to Marty Fletcher some time ago. I'm just wrapping up my OBD-II conversion (hope to be done this week!) and should have it ready for fuel-sync and double-checked next week.

My 53mm TB arrived last Friday, so I need to reassemble that and get it back on. Once running, I'll follow that up with a few more miles on the road, throw in an oil and trans-fluid change (the trans is new as well). and then get my base tunes loaded up. I hope to hit up the dyno mid-March!

The OBD-II conversion is quite easy and I'm using another HGM Compushift Mini A518 for the trans controls on the 46RH. Since I used the HGM in the past, I knew what it needed, so I made specific TPS and VSS signal leads just for it. I'm also taking the opportunity to update some of the wiring on the RamCharger at the same time - namely getting rid of the spaghetti fusible links and fender-mounted relays (I have used a 94-96 Ram Fuse box/PDC in the past and it has worked very well). I'm also upgrading the thin 16 AWG headlamp wiring to 14AWG on 2-separate relays (which I moved inside the Ram PDC for a factory-installed look).

In 2006, Dodge went to the CAN-BUS system, which is not compatible with the 2004 Jeep cluster. The 2005 Dodge ECU works with the ‘01 to ‘06 Jeep cluster. Although Chris at Hot Wire did my wiring conversion, I know that he had to reconfigure the ‘06 Dodge harness to ‘05 specs. Again, so it would work with the ‘04 cluster and play nice with the rest of the harness. I could have gone with a custom cluster, but this route was easier and kept the stock look on the dash.

I had the 545 built by ATS. Purple power. They did their stage 4 build which is rated to 700 ponies. I’m really happy with how it came out - very quick shifts which are buttery smooth. Night and day improvement over the old 42RLE - even though ATS built that tranny for me as well.
 
I've been tucking away information for myself because I do plan on a Hemi swap down the road, in fact I already have dibs on an engine in a 2013 Charger that my buddy has for now. However I am really attached to my manual transmission, my current thought was to use an AX-15, with the bellhousing out of a Dakota so it bolts up directly and the gearset out of a Mk. IV Toyota Supra so it can take 400+ lb-ft of torque. But, I figured I'd ask if anyone has any better ideas for a manual trans to go behind a 5.7

Oh that's right, I forget that the 02- (early) 05 Rams were still PCI (I should update and add a note in the ECM info above!).

Good to hear about your trans good fortunes. I had a local company rebuild my 46RH for use behind my stroker to the same power levels and it's been buttery smooth and reliable as well. They specialize in Dodge transmissions (mostly diesel stuff) but have a very knowledgable Dodge specialist that has likely forgotten more about the differences in Mopar transmissions than I ever knew.

The R154 is close to the AX15 and shares lots of parts, but note that while the R154 was indeed used behind the Supra, those that built up their 2ZJ's often found the manual trans to be the weak spot in the drivetrain and most running seriously boosted engines all went with an automatic (or in some instances modified a Tremec to fit).

Personally, I don't think I'd ever consider an AX15 a viable candidate in stock form. RSG does makes an upgraded "Terminator" AX15 that uses some upgraded gears and internals of the later Supra R154 transmissions. Supposedly, it is typically quite reliable behind LS-powered Jeeps. The NV4500 is another option, though in my opinion the NV is a big ol' thing and since it has been out of production since the mid-2000's, it is getting harder to find. It's often too long for non-stretched Jeeps too!

The one option that I'd be most inclined to try out is the new(ish) Tremec TR-4050. https://tremec-blog.com/tremec-tr-4050-off-road-manual-transmission-solution/

It has an excellent set of gear ratios: 6.16, 3.11, 1.71, 1.00, 0.76 which would work well on the street and trail. That 6.16 first gear with a 2.72 t-case Lo range, and 5.13 axle ratio would yield a ~86:1 crawl ratio - that is higher than an 5-speed TJ Rubi. If you were to couple the SST with a Rubicon t-case, you would end up with a 126:1 crawl ratio - enough to make even the double/triple t-cased Toyota guys jealous! :)

Take a look at this video on the TR-4050 being installed into a TJ. They have to notch the STOCK skid plate to get transmission in place. So I don't think you could use a tummy tuck type skid. About 4 minutes into the video.

I've seen this video before and recall seeing the notch. It looks like the belly of the trans hangs down below the skid some. I noticed they're also running t-case drop spacers. This is similar to what has to be done with an NV4500 install as well. I don't know if there is enough room to push the trans up much, so to use a tummy tuck skid someone is certainly looking at some sheet metal/tub work.

I was considering the SST at one point. I even asked Trent McGee about it when we ran across him on a trail ride last year. He really liked it (noting his is coupled with a R2.8T):

No idea what a H55 was, so I Googled it - looks like a Landcruiser trans...

I'm not knocking it as a viable transmission but just trying to put the info out there as a warning. Depending on the amount of lift you are shooting for you could negate the needed belly skid drop. I'm just glad there are companies out there offering stuff for us.

I talked to one guy who put a NV4500 into his TJ and he redid his trans tunnel to make it fit instead of dropping it down.

Yes Trent and some of the other writers from the 4x4 mags really like the 2.8 cummins.
