Howdy everyone! The other night my father and myself were out to eat and we started chatting about out jeeps. He has a 2001 Manual SE and I have a 1999 Automatic Sport. The conversation went on to talk about which we think is better for off-roading, the manual or the automatic. I was pretty adamant on the Automatic being better because of the low-end torque and more control you have. Though he seems to stand on his ground that a manual is better. What are your thoughts on the automatic vs manual for off-roading?

From a performance standpoint automatic. I personally think manuals are a lot more fun, but I’m not enough of a hardcore wheeler to care. If I was I’d ditch the manual in a second.

No way! Manuals are pure trash, they should all be scrapped and recycled to make more Automatics and parts for automatics......

Man this site needs the little flip off guy like pirate had....

We had this talk last week.

And I can easily imagine where the auto can do things and go places a manual can't.
I've never seen it. The more accurate statement is you can go lots of places with a stock auto that a stock manual will struggle heavily on. With enough money thrown at the manual, that ceases to be true.
Minimum 5-1 gearing, 6-1 is better. That's about 3500 all in.
