NV3550 manual to 32RH automatic conversion

I put one in an 03 sport. Not a big deal if you understand Ohms law and what wires do. A rubi adds complexity. Factory lockers?

you have to decide between having the factory lockers to operate off the factory switch but then having a manual torque converter lock up switch. OR wiring the lockers to work off independent switches and have the torque converter lockup controlled by the PCM.

For an 03-04 the swap can be done semi reasonably by converting the jeep to be an 2002. Rubi adds the additional complexity of the locker switches.

Are you able to do a write up on yours since we have mostly matching Jeeps?

That is more complex than just the switches and making them operate the lockers. The 4low mode signal is sent to the PCM from the t-case switch which trips the 4WD dash light in the cluster. Only then will the locker switches get power to activate the locker pumps.

I understand that. If you had a Rubi and did what i did to make the 32rh work, you would loose all that functionality. If you wanted the 241 to work with the dash light you need to switch the tcase position switch/pigtail. To get the lockers to work you would need to abandon the OEM switch.

did you ever do a write up on this? I've got an '03, 4.0, NV3550 wanting to change to auto. 32RH seems to be my best route, but having a hard time finding detailed instructions on the swap.

As much as I love the 32RH it'd be easier all the way around if you converted to the 42RLE. You can easily add the external 42RLE control unit to control it and the rest would bolt-in. There's no easy way to have a 2003 control the 32RH torque converter's lock-up circuit that is supposed to engage at cruising speeds.

Controlling the TCC was probably the easiest part. The hardest part is mounting. You would have to build a standalone crossmember to mount the transmission in a late model.

Yes its easy to control the TCC manually with an on-off switch but I dunno how to have it done automatically with a 2003 or newer TJ. I'd hate to have to control it with a switch.

A 2002 pcm and adding a wire in the pcm connector to go to the solenoid. If my memory serves me right the pcm switches ground and the power is tied into the evap purge solenoid.

To run a 2002 pcm you also need a 3 wire oil pressure sensor which requires splicing into a 5v and return circuit. Don’t use scotch locks.

Good to know a 2002 PCM will work in a 2003. And thus maybe in a 2004 too.

An auto pcm from any year with a coil rail and mini cats should work. Not sure if that started in 00 or 01. I agree 03-04 should work this way. 05-06…. goodluck.
 
Still thinking about doing this NV3550 to 32RH swap. My TJ is an 02. Do I need the PCM from the donor or just the trans and then mess with the wiring?
Is the 32RH the same length as the 3550? Meaning, will it change the mount positions, require new DSs, etc?
