Sent to my email,

"Greetings Fellow Enthusiasts,

I’m Steve Sanders, Program Leader for Cummins Repower[emoji769] – the new crate engine business of Cummins Inc, responsible for bringing the R2.8 Turbo Diesel to market.

First of all, thank you for expressing your interest in the R2.8 Turbo Diesel by submitting our online notification form. Your voice brought this program to life and I am grateful for that. The entire Cummins team is thrilled with the overwhelmingly positive response from enthusiasts like you from all over the world.

Every day we are asked, “When can I buy the R2.8?” and, “How much will it cost?” While we aren’t quite ready to announce those details yet, I assure you our team is working tirelessly to perfect our R2.8 Turbo Diesel package based on your feedback, in order to live up to your expectations for Cummins quality.

As explained in the formal announcement of Cummins Repower at the 2016 SEMA Show, our start of sales date is dependent upon emissions certification. We will only launch once we can provide customers clear guidance as to which vehicle vintage and weight class our certifications will cover. Cummins Repower’s most important objective is to offer enjoyable, reliable and compliant engines to keep your Repowers on the road or trail for years to come, and eliminate the confusion at the license branch and smog referee.

I have had the distinct pleasure of driving many of our test vehicles thousands of miles in many different configurations over the past several years, and I plan to be first in line to buy one. When it comes to what you would expect from a Cummins, the R2.8 does not disappoint – giving any qualifying vehicle a turbo-charged diesel breath of new life.

We recently showcased a few Cummins R2.8 test vehicles at this year’s Easter Jeep Safari and Overland Expo West. In additon, we were recently featured on Xtreme Off-Road on Power Nation TV. Watch the episode where the R2.8 Turbo Diesel is installed into a wildly modified Land Rover Defender 90 by host Ian Johnson.

In the meantime, keep planning your builds, posting on social media using the hashtag #CumminsRepower, and keep the questions coming.

Very Respectfully,

Steve Sanders

Is this the same one Fred Williams had on Dirt Everyday?

Cause it was a really nice install.

Huh.. I wonder if it will be cheaper to make the swap on my Rubicon or simply buy a new 2018...

I still want to know the price.

I'm guessing it will be in the neighborhood of 15k installed. So not worth it to most of us, unless you have a crap ton of money to spend. But hey... If I win the lottery.

Interesting. It would make a lot of sense if you had a well built TJ with quality mods, and needed a new engine for some reason. Or bragging rights at the local OHV area.

I'm wondering what the weight difference is. Cummins say 503lbs. But Jeep says the 4.0L weights 530lbs. I have trouble seeing a diesel lighter than a gas engine.

The new long block 4.0L I bought last month cost $4600 all in, installed with new clutch, water pump, hoses, rad.... and a 7 year warranty from SandJ Engines in Spokane.

I wonder what the Cummins Warranty looks like?

Id bet Chris is right, around 15k. I wonder if you now get to worry about diesel exhaust fluid and all the issues there or if it would be exempt since its going in an old enough vehicle. I have personally bought my last diesel, and thats my 2007 5.9C that I will drive to 500k miles. Since then they have gotten so expensive to maintain and purchase and at the same time gas engines have increased in power and efficiency.

Depends on the materials the block and heads are made of. Remember this is a 4 cylinder and our 4.0 is all iron.

Just a quick look for comparison, I saw a 3.6 Isuzu diesel with a dry weight of 375 lbs.

Well I just got back from Overland Expo East and the R2.8 was on display.
The rep from Cummins said it went on sale Friday 9/29 and MSRP was right at $9,000.
It has been approved for 1999 and older vehicles according to the rep.
They had an engine and transmission on a frame and one installed in a TJ, too.

Sweeeeeet. What transmission did they pair it with? Will it work with the stock 4 speed auto in a 4.0?

The R2.8 Turbo Diesel is a powerful 2.8-liter 4-cylinder engine targeted as a cleaner and more efficient alternative to many older original gasoline and diesel engines used in iconic small pickups, SUV's, and 4x4's that are beyond their useful life*. I like diesels, but for the time and effort, I'd just as soon put a bullet proof 5.3 with 320 hp and 340 ft lbs for probably less than that cost. If my 4.0 ever dies (it wont) the gm ls v8 is what will replace it.

Still have about 200,000 miles to go until my 4.0 possibly gives out. I'm right with you!

Sounds like the same engine Chrysler Egypt has been putting in the J8 for the past 9 years.

"J8 is based on the venerable Wrangler Unlimited, but Jeep has strengthened the frame and built the axles, brakes, and suspension to military specifications. This means leaf-springs in the rear for a higher cargo capacity and the retention of Jeep’s Command-Trac four-wheel-drive system for maximum on- and off-road performance. Powered by a 2.8L turbodiesel engine producing 158 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque and mated to a five-speed automatic transmission, the J8 can carry 2952 lb by itself or tow up to 7716 lb. The J8 also features a hood-mounted snorkel with a special filtration system that allows it to ford water up to 30 in. deep and operate in a sandstorm for up to five hours"
