Arizona Rock Crawler

Lockup has the trans running 40* cooler on the road. I never got above 125* going 50mph for an hour. Never got above 165* while wheeling.
I still have a leak in the output shaft seal though which is frustrating. The PO already had a Teraflex seal extension in there that’s banged up and I’m sure it’s causing the leak but I just can’t figure out how to get it out. I have a new extension to replace it. I tried replacing the seal with rtv around the edge of it and still leaksView attachment 230361

Also good that you noticed it's not locking up. The cooler circuit goes full flow with the converter on. Not the same as Full time lube modification to a manual shift valve so that it flows oil in park.

Either way good work.

Yes, that dent in the seal is the leak. I have never worked with one of those extensions, but I see what your talking about.

If it's loctite'd in there, you may need to warm around it with a small torch and pry it out with a with a tool like a rolling head pry bar, to replace the extension also.
So I replaced that seal with a new one and it still leaked. I even RTVed around the outside of the seal. So now I’m thinking the extension is what’s causing the issue. And I checked to make sure the seal is mating with the input shaft of the tcase

This was by far the most challenging trail I’ve ever done and the videos do absolutely zero justice. It was 3 miles of straight obstacles with no break. Took all day pretty much. Lots of diff grabbers which was one of the hardest parts.
That ledge at 3:19 has been the death of many a hardtop or XJ rear window!

That gatekeeper is really tough. I almost want to try going all the way to the left next time. My dad simply couldn’t get up on the right. I had to winch him. We are wondering if the difference is that his rig is much heavier

Yeah, it sounds like it may be leaking around the extension. Buy a smaller Rolling head pry bar if you don't have one, or maybe grind two small notches in the side of the extension you will be removing to get a grip on it better.

I needed to make some modifications as well. I just drilled a pilot hole for the stock self tapping screws.

I’m at an impass here because I can’t use a rear flare on these trails lately. They just die. And the ones I have are too solid of a plastic so they bend the tub when pressed on. But at the same time now my tub is completely exposed now. There’s no way around it I need corners. I even sucked up a rock that bent my wheel well out a little bit.

I’m not sure if I can swing savvy corners and sliders at the same time even though that would be ideal. I’m thinking my priority list is corners then sliders with the impending need for an auxiliary trans cooler once it starts getting hot

I decided I wasn’t ok with the output shaft seal leaking so I went to work trying to pull the banged up Teraflex seal extension the PO put in.
I tried a little puller but it couldn’t do it.

After banging my head against the wall I realized I could take the tail housing off the trans and get to it from the backside. But low and behold there was a bearing in the way

So, we had to press that bearing out to access the backside of the extension and then press that out. Then pressed the bearing back in. Removing the extension revealed this

I’m not sure how the PO managed to scar the bore that badly. I sanded a little bit and filled in the scarring with ultra grey rtv and put a light coat of rtv around the new extension and hammered that in. Then put light coat of rtv around new seal and got that in. Hopefully she’s leak free now! Letting the RTV cure overnight so we will see tomorrow.

How about MCE rears if you don’t go corners? They won’t protect you but will give you coverage if that’s what your looking for

I’ve toyed with the idea of MCEs as a good compromise but whenever I start thinking that way I bring myself back to building exactly what I want even if it takes a little longer to get there. For what I do no flares is the right choice, so I’ll be saving my pennies for savvy corners, savvy sliders, and genright 0”boulder front flares or similar. As @toximus would say, dream big!

Well all that hard work chasing trans leaks seems to be over. I’ve driven it 4 times over the last few days and everything is bone dry.

Regarding the trans pan. I got the mopar deep pan with the hard gasket and it leaked. The instructions for the gasket said to torque to 125 inch lbs which I followed. Factory torque spec is 150 so I tried that instead and hasn’t leaked yet since.

For the dip stick tube I put a thin layer of RTV around the O ring and that seems to have solved it.

My airbag light has been flickering on and off the last few weeks and now it’s stuck on and my horn doesn’t work. Sounds like a bad clockspring...

Since this topic is in regard's to Arizona I will share something new to me. With all the driving I do around Phoenix and the surrounding areas I see very few TJ,s. All the Jeeps I see are JK,s and JL,s. I drove one of my hot rods to a car show in Lake Havasu last weekend and saw tons of TJ,s all over. No JK,s and JL,s. Yes there lots of dirt trails to explore and enjoy. I would suggest that maybe the Arizona group try this. I would like to do this if anything is ever planed. Motels are not expensive.

Got some lightly used Maxbuilt Trail Tail taillights from @BuildBreakRepeat installed and man they look good! They are going with the theme of trying to slim down my rear corners. The old taillights hung off the tub 2.5” and these hang off the tub 7/8”.

@Alex01 sparked the confidence in me to do a higher clearance BCE than the faceplate I have now. Hopefully that will be coming in the not so far future to help clean up the rear end.

I’ve got a little shimmy in my steering wheel ever since getting my 35” MT/Rs. It’s mostly when going around 50 mph while turning my steering wheel slightly around bends in the road. Going to try and get them rebalanced today. If that doesn’t work it sounds like @tworley had good luck with centramatics

Exact situations I had. Tried to replicate it this morning and the centramatics definitely get the job done.
