Ha, ha - South side maybe, but pretty quiet in the burbs. Not so much the stealing of gas, but more about discouraging sabotage.

A siphon hose no longer will go into the tank anyway.

I wanted to siphon some gas for a generator during a Florida hurricane. Can't be done I found out.

People can still sabotage ya by putting stuff in the tank.

So at least you got that going for ya.

Seems to me there is a locking door that goes over the filler might be better anyway.

Attached pic is for reference not a product endorsement. This would also allow you to use a good mopar cap because fit is very important.

Yes, plenty of solutions, but don't really want to add another key to my collection, thought the ignition keying option could work out. Probably an expensive cap with a trip the the locksmith though!

I went to a locksmith to get my MOPAR console keyed to the ignition.

I think it was $50 bucks.

I could be wrong it was 6 years ago or so and I am going from memory.

Wow who have you upset? Sugar in the fuel filler or a knife in the tire sidewalls , which is simplest and quickest. :)

I have a Mopar gas cap that was keyed to my ignition by the dealer. The cap doesn’t look anything like what’s in that link. It looks identical to the original one plus a key hole. I’ve owned it for close to 20 years and have only used it for about a week because I started getting evap codes after installing it. I never confirmed that the cap was the issue but didn’t think it was worth the risk.

My stock locking cap started slipping internally so it went in the trash and was replaced by a regular cap. One less thing to break and leave you unable to get back on the road....
 
Stealing gas they drill a hole in the tank now. But having an armored tank works for us.

Same concept on stealing cat converters. Our TC skid does a good job making it more worthwhile to move along to another vehicle.

Interestingly, they both have the same part number, but the Mopar one is not compatible with a TJ. Does anyone have experience with either part and ease of getting it keyed by a locksmith or dealership?

I don't recommend it. I had the crown unit a few years ago. The lock broke after about 4 months and I couldn't unlock it to get the cap off. I finally was able to jam a screwdriver into the lock and get the stupid thing off. If I was to do it again, I would use one of the locking doors instead of the locking cap. But it's not worth the hassle. If somebody needs the fuel that much, I won't be too bothered by it being stolen. Just don't cut the soft top or break any windows.

Quadratic has the Mopar one it works $45 at the local locksmith to key it, wife left the old one at the pump, pissed me off
 
this is what will happen leaving you stranded. The internal spring mechanism will break and just spin and click freely. Luckily mine broke the rest of the way off fairly easy and $8 at Autozone for an in stock non locking cap later I'm in a better #jeeplife situation.

Thank you for sharing this. I have been looking at getting a locking door for mine. First, because I live on the Rez and they have tried to steal gas from me. (I know this because they left my gas cap on the tire and I ended up running over it.) Second, I like how sleek it looks. I am trying to ditch all my chrome and go with the matte black all around.

The shiny hinges on my jeep are anyway.

As far as stealing gas goes, like I said you can't get a syphon hose into the tank anymore.

try it.
