Is it necessary to run a truss on a Dana 44?

I have a rear dana 44 that i am wondering if it is necessary to truss. Barnes 4wd has a mini truss on their website for a dana 44 for around $60. it just goes over some of the axle tubes and the cast center section of the axle. I plan to run 35 inch tires. Has any one done this? im not ofraid of welding all this my self BTW. is this necessary? how easy is it to bend these housings?

No, it is absolutely not necessary to add a trust.

The biggest tire you can (and should) safely run on a build Dana 44 is a 35. A 35" tire does not need a truss.

Again, 100% unnecessary. This is an attempt to solve a problem that doesn't exist

Hi Jerry, I have a 2000 TJ with a rear-Dana 44 that I just had out to install a locker. Should I put an axle truss on the top of the pumpkin? I don't 4wheel hard .... but I'd rather spend a few dollars than risk a bent axle. If a truss goes on around the top, will it interfere with the track-bar? Thanks - Tod

No need for a truss, that axle isn't known for bending on even very difficult trails. Not Including jumping your Jeep off hills and cliffs.

I would say to no put a truss on if you don’t wheel hard. Even if you do you most likely would be fine without one. Unless your doing like a triangulated 4 link The most I would do is weld the tubes to the center section but even that’s not needed

As long as he has a 220 welder he should be just fine. I used a millermatic 211 220 welder to do mine last week I just set the setting to a little higher than 1/4 inch and made sure to preheat and and let cool slowly and it worked out great.

Ok so let’s add this scenario. Just bought a rubi axle and the brackets for the control arms are bent. We plan on cutting them off and trussing. If we’re gonna be welding might as well strengthen it

And what's your plan to straighten the axle after you warp it from "strengthening" it

No need to truss it, it's more than strong enough for 35's as is. Don't waste your $$$ or time. I'm running trails that 98% of the people here wouldn't and never had a bent Dana 44 axle.
