The gauge and float can be working, but the fuel PUMP.....pumps the gas out of the tank through a strainer into your fuel lines then all.......the way to your injectors, you can hear the pump cycling ( doesn’t mean that it is actually pumping gas) if the pump is going bad.... it will work...

when i troulbleshoot issues like this I first start with the basics. is it getting fuel, air and spark, it starts occasionally so you are getting spark and air, I don't know if you have troubleshot the fuel pump, or the fuel pump strainer is clogged causing the intermiment starting. check out...
